Chiquinquirá and the indigenous people of Colombia
Colombia
The indigenous people of Colombia venerate Chiquinquirá as the mother who protects them.
The indigenous people of Colombia, such as the arhuacos, koguis and kankuamos of the Sierra Nevada, venerate the Virgin of Chiquinquirá. They take her in procession through the mountains.
Tradition tells that the Virgin of Chiquinquirá protects indigenous people from poverty and discrimination. The indigenous people pray in their native languages.
Every July 9, the indigenous people go up to Chiquinquirá with their traditional costumes and musical instruments.
