In the Llanos del Meta, the plain peasants venerate Chiquinquirá. They carry it in procession through the savannah, among the cattle.
Tradition tells that the Virgin of Chiquinquirá protects the cattle from the droughts and floods of the Meta River. The peasants pray to him before they let go of the cattle.
Every 9 July, the plains organize a horse procession for the savannas.
