In Santander, the Virgin of the Rosary is the patron of the department. The Santandereans carry it in procession through the valleys of the Magdalena River.
Tradition tells that the Virgin of the Rosary protected Santander during the Thousand Day war. The Santandereans prayed the Rosary and the Virgin protected them.
Every 7 October, thousands of Santandereans celebrate the feast of the Virgin of the Rosary with music and dances.
