The Lajas Canyon is 100 meters deep, and the Guáitara River flows at its bottom. The faithful say that this river represents the river of eternal life that flows from the heart of the Virgin Mary.
When the Virgin appeared on the rock, the river grew stronger and its water became clearer. The farmers say that the river water cures illnesses.
The basilica, built over the canyon, seems to float among the clouds, as if the Virgin were between heaven and earth.
