History of Marian devotion in Comoros

History of Marian devotion in Comoros

The Christian presence in Comoros dates back to the arrival of Spanish Franciscan missionaries in the 16th century who accompanied Portuguese sailors on their Indian Ocean routes. These first evangelizers landed on the islands of Gran Comora, Mohéli and Anjouan by introducing devotion to the Virgin Mary among the local population. However, systematic evangelization did not come until the establishment of the Mission of the Comoros in the 19th century with the missionaries of the Holy Spirit who found in an archipelago of Sunni Muslim majority a difficult ground for the Gospel but also open to interreligious dialogue given the veneration that Islam professes Maryam the mother of Isa.

The small Catholic community composed mainly of expats from Madagascar France and other African nations along with some local converts kept the Marian faith alive around the figure of the Virgin Mary as a model of surrender and obedience to God. The Cathedral of Our Lady of Perpetual Relief in Moroni built at the end of the 19th century during the French colonial period is the spiritual center of the Catholic community in Comoros, hosting an image of the Virgin of Perpetual Relief donated by the redeemer missionaries who attended the mission for decades with dedication and sacrifice.

The June 27 Day of Our Lady of Perpetual Relief brings together the community in a celebration that combines Catholic tradition with songs and rhythms of the Comorian culture including the use of the traditional gabusi instrument of rope. The procession runs through the streets near the cathedral with the image of the Virgin adorned with tropical flowers such as the ylang-ylang and the vanilla while the faithful sing in French and Shicomorian being the most visible expression of the Catholic faith in the archipelago.

Despite legal restrictions on religious freedom in a country of Muslim majority, the Catholic community maintains its Marian devotion through the prayer of the Rosary in domestic groups and in weekly liturgical celebrations. The Virgin Mary is a natural bridge between Christian and Muslim traditions as both religions honor her deeply. The Koran mentions Maryam on numerous occasions especially in the 19 sura that bears his name and recognizes her as the mother of the prophet Isa born of a virginal conception creating unique spaces of interreligious dialogue in the archipelago.

The three islands of the archipelago maintain their own Marian traditions. In Anjouan, the Catholic community of Mutsamudu is venerating Our Lady of the Rosary in a coral chapel and volcanic stone built in 1880 one of the oldest historical buildings on the island. In Mohéli the capital Fomboni houses a chapel dedicated to Our Lady of Fatima built in 1950 by Portuguese missionaries who arrived from Mozambique. The faithful travel by boat between the islands to celebrate together the Marian parties by strengthening community ties and Catholic identity in the archipelago.

Pope Francis's visit to neighbouring Madagascar in 2019 brought renewed hope to the Catholics of Comoros who traveled to Antananarivo to participate in the papal events. The Catholic Church in Comoros, although numerically small, is active in charitable and educational works serving children of all religions in their schools where the figure of Mary is presented as a model of virtue. Interreligious dialogue is facilitated by mutual respect for Mary, and local magnets often recognize Mary's virginity as a sign of her divine choice by allowing Muslim neighbours to accompany her Christian friends to Marian celebrations.

The Catholic community of Comoros shows that faith can flourish even in the most difficult contexts as a witness to the universality of the Church. The number of faithful, though small, keeps Marian traditions alive by transmitting them from generation to generation in an archipelago where being Catholic requires courage and conviction but also opens the door to dialogue and friendship with the Muslim brothers who share the veneration for the Mother of Jesus.
