Founded on the Solemnity of the Assumption
The Korean Episcopal Conference records August 15, 1946 as the founding date of Ganggyeong and points to the Assumption of Mary as patronage.
The coincidence is documented. Without an additional foundational chronicle, it is not stated who chose the date or the specific process that led to erection.
A decisive moment in Korea
The parish was born one year after the end of Japanese colonial rule, also commemorated in Korea on August 15. The data places the foundation in a period of social and ecclesial reorganization.
Catholic solemnity should not be confused with civil commemoration, even if they both share a date. For the parish, patronage expresses a truth of faith about Mary and the destiny of humanity in Christ.
The Assumption of Mary
The Church professes that Mary, after her earthly life, was raised in body and soul to the glory of heaven. His Assumption is a unique participation in the victory of Jesus Christ over death.
This is not a divinization of Mary or a force of her own. Everything comes from the grace of God and anticipates the promised resurrection to the believing people.
The dogmatic definition of 1950
Pius XII solemnly defined the Assumption in 1950 by Munificentissimus Deus. The parish of Ganggyeong, however, had already carried this patronage since 1946, four years before the definition.
The fact does not mean that belief was born in 1950: the definition confirmed a previous liturgical and doctrinal tradition widely lived by the Church.
Hope for the whole person
The Assumption proclaims that the body is not a worthless rest. Christian salvation reaches the whole person and supports respect for body dignity, especially in the face of disease, violence and death.
In a community born after years of oppression and world war, this hope had a deep human resonance, although available sources do not allow for the attribution of concrete interpretations to its founders.
A dependent missionary station
The national directory records a mission station linked to Ganggyeong. This indicates that pastoral care extends beyond the main headquarters.
The station should be investigated separately if it has its own Marian title. The marker of this page corresponds only to the parish of Ganggyeong.
Mary, image of the future Church
Paul VI presented solemnity as a celebration of Mary's glorification and as an image of what the Church hopes to become.
The invocation calls to live the present with responsibility: the hope of heaven does not turn away from history, but rather leads to caring for life, working for justice and accompanying the suffering.
