Marian devotion
In the old urban area of Masan, now integrated in Changwon, the parish of Guam-dong holds patron como a Mary in her Assumption. Its great church, capable of hosting diocesan celebrations, was born during a stage of rapid residential and industrial growth.

The Assumption in Guam-dong

A church for a growing area
During the 1980s Guam-dong became a new residential area, close to the railway station, the bus terminal and the eastern access to Masan.
The diocese needed a wide space to complement the Cathedral of Yangon-dong, limited to great calls. The new church of Guam-dong came to play this role in priestly ordinations and other celebrations.
High capacity modern architecture
The diocesan chronicle describes a modernism building inspired by the arch of the western medieval churches. A large outer cross is integrated with access and curved facade.
The temple can house about a thousand people. In the interior, the height, verticality of the crucifix and the wood celosies that moderate the light contribute to the recuperation.
From mother parish to ageing community
Guam-dong was supported by the mother parish of Yangon-dong and came to have a large youth community. Subsequent industrial and residential changes reduced the population of the neighborhood and transformed its composition.
The community responded by strengthening inner life and mutual care. The physical amplitude of the temple retains the memory of another stage, while the mission continues with fewer people and new needs.
The shared work of the faithful
On the twenty-fifth anniversary, the parishes gathered funds to rehabilitate the temple. By replacing the pavement, they entrusted technical tasks to professionals and personally assumed auxiliary work, cleaning and finishing.
The savings were used to acquire land for a Marian garden. Years later, the community continued to move patiently towards this project, without hiding its difficulties.
The hope of the body and life
The Assumption proclaims the dignity of the body and the eternal vocation of the person. That is why it can especially illuminate a community that faces aging, disease, mourning and social change.
Christian hope does not despise the earth or history. Move to take care of the present life, accompany the elders and support those who fear to be forgotten.
Not confusing with Guam-dong of Daegu
There is another parish called Guam in Daegu, dedicated to the Immaculate Conception. This file belongs to Masshoewon-gu, ChangwonHe is from the diocese of Masan and his patronage is the Assumption.
It is also not geographically related to the island of Guam in Oceania. The coincidence comes only from the romanization of different names.
