Heart of Mary of Imam - A parish built with perseverance in Gangneung

In Ipam-dong, south of the centre of Gangneung, a Catholic community learned to live for years without a temple of its own. Her patron is Mary contemplated from the mystery of her HeartThe woman who hears, keeps the Word, remains by the Cross and gathers the disciples in hope.

An amazingly documented Marian patronazgo

The directory of the Korean Episcopal Conference identifies the patronage of ipam with Korean words Sex Mole, literally "Heart of the Mother of God" or "Heart of Mary." The same source sets out its date of foundation, the diocese and the present home.

It is not a title reconstructed from the name of the temple. It is the official Marian dedication of the community.

What it means to talk about the Heart of Mary

In biblical language, the heart does not name only feelings. It is the inner center of the person: there you hear the calls of God, you discern, remember, decide and love.

The Gospels show Mary by keeping and meditating on the events related to Jesus. His heart is not sentimental evasion, but a believer memory capable of welcoming joy, uncertainty and pain.

An entirely Christ-oriented heart

The true Marian devotion leads to the Gospel and the person of Jesus Christ. Paul VI recalled in Marialis cultus that the veneration of the Virgin must have a biblical foundation, a liturgical sense and a Christological orientation.

To contemplate the Heart of Mary means to learn its availability: to listen to the Word, to respond with freedom, to serve the neighbor and to remain faithful when the path becomes difficult.

The foundation of March 25, 2008

The diocese of Chuncheon created the parish of ipam with effects of 25 March 2008, solemnity of the Annunciation. Contemporary news explained that the decision was intended to respond more closely to the pastoral growth of the Gangneung area.

The community was formed with territories that until then depended on the parishes of Noam-dong and Okcheon-dong. The date of the Annunciation offers a particularly Marian resonance: the institutional birth of ipam was linked to the yes of Mary and the Incarnation.

The neighborhoods entrusted to the new community

This historical relationship helps to understand that ipam did not arise only to have another building. He was born to bring the Eucharist, catechesis and pastoral accompaniment to a wide range of neighborhoods in the southern sector of Gangneung.

Five years celebrating in a rented place

The young parish could not immediately acquire a site. During his first five years he rented a commercial place to celebrate the liturgy and sustain community life.

The situation became more fragile because the security provided by the rent was compromised by the owner's economic difficulties. At the end of the contract in January 2013, the community had to move to an even more precarious space.

A small and noisy interim church

The 2013 chronicle describes in detail that second place: about 143 square meters for an attendance of around three hundred people. Some of the faithful used mobile chairs and another remained standing.

A closed terrace, of just 17 square meters, served simultaneously for various pastoral needs. The same building operated leisure and restoration facilities, and the noise reached the celebration. These data allow us to appreciate the perseverance of the community without idealizing objectively difficult conditions.

The decision to raise a temple

The parishioners got a land on the ancient plot 475 of Ipam-dong and celebrated the beginning of the works. 14 March 2013. This plot corresponds to the present home of the parish, 18 Ipam-ro 91beon-gil.

The continuity between the historical plot, the current episcopal direction and the cartography makes it possible to safely identify the present temple as the result of that project.

Hand-made rosaries to support the work

The expected cost of construction far exceeded the available resources. Priest and faithful made and sold rosaries of pearls and coral, along with padded work, to gather funds.

This simple detail links the material history of the temple with Marian prayer. The Rosary was not only a prayer practice: its handworked accounts also became concrete help in building a community home.

A work threatened by lack of resources

In June 2013, the Catholic press warned that insufficient funds could stop construction. The call for help did not hide the limitations, but explained why a parish with several years of life still celebrated under provisional conditions.

The present existence of the temple shows that this precariousness was not the end of history. Without attributing dates or ceremonies that the localized sources do not document, it can be said that the community came to be established on the site for which it had worked.

The Heart of Mary and perseverance

The history of ipam offers a sober spiritual reading: listening to God does not eliminate economic difficulties or replace responsibility. It invites them to face them together, with transparency, patience and mutual care.

Mary kept events in her heart that she did not fully understand. The community of ipam also had to hold a hope whose timetable and resources were not assured.

Youth and Scripture

In 2014, three brothers from the parish were recognized for completing, for the third consecutive year, a diocesan exercise of handwritten copy of the Bible. The initiative brought together 80 students from thirty-two parishes and worked the two letters to the Corinthians and the letter to the Galatians.

The chronicle highlighted different ways of internalizing the Word: to highlight, to note reflections, to copy in another language or to express the text by drawing. Writing was not a calligraphy competition, but an invitation to listen and practice.

Save the Word as Mary

This small youth memory is especially consistent with the parish invocation. Mary's heart is presented in the Gospel as a place of custody and meditation; slowly copying Scripture can help the Word move from sight to memory and from memory to life.

Not everyone can complete entire pages. They can also adopt simple gestures: copy a verse, read it in the family, keep a few minutes of silence and ask what specific service it inspires.

Gangneung, between mountain and sea

Gangneung opens to the East Sea and is surrounded by the mountain landscape of Gangwon. Ipam-dong occupies an urban area south of the central core, not an isolated village or the famous tourist coast of the city.

The parish serves neighbors who live the daily reality of a city: families, elders, workers, students and people who go through solitude or precariousness. Your patronage invites you to listen to those specific lives.

The official address is 18 Umm-ro 91beon gil, Gangneung. The cartography consulted by the Korean name of the temple returns the coordinates 37.7553018, 128.9150309, on the parish compound.

The marker has not been placed in the generic centre of Gangneung or in one of the other Korean localities called ipam. The direction, the name of the temple and the historical plot match.

Do not confuse this advocation

There are other Korean parishes dedicated to the Heart of Mary and several localities called ipam. This fact sheet corresponds exclusively to Definate, Gangung, within the diocese of Chuncheon.

The form "Heart of Mary" respects the episcopal record. Where a source specified "Immaculate Heart" must be preserved that form; in ipam, localized documentation does not.

To visit and pray

Imam is an active parish, not a tourist monument. The hours may vary and must be confirmed before travelling. During the liturgy it is appropriate to keep quiet, respect the ordinary life of the community and request permission before photographing people.

The visitor can offer a ten of the Rosary for those who celebrate faith in precarious spaces, another for young people who learn to listen to Scripture and another for the families of Gangneung.
