The Heart of Mary of Yangon - Fifty years of prayer and memory

In the South Korean city of Yangon, a Catholic parish is dedicated to Heart of Mary. His history shows how memory, prayer and service can form the heart of a community over generations.

Documented patronage

The Bishops' Conference of Korea Sex Mole, literally "Sacred Heart of the Mother [Mary]," as patronage of the parish of Yangon. The dedication is corroborated by two other Korean Catholic directories.

This page uses the Spanish form "Corazón de María." It does not automatically add "Immaculate" to the official Korean name, although both expressions are closely related in Catholic spirituality.

The heart in the biblical language

In the Bible, the heart does not name only feelings. It is the center of the person, where it is heard, remembered, discerned and decided.

To contemplate the Heart of Mary means to contemplate an entirely open life to God: an intelligence that meditates, a freedom that responds and a compassion that remains with suffering.

Mary kept everything in her heart

The Gospel of Luke presents Mary by preserving and meditating on events. He doesn't understand everything at once, but he doesn't throw away what's still dark.

This believing patience offers a model for families and communities. Saving does not mean hiding problems, but giving them a space of prayer, dialogue and discernment.

A heart through

Simeon announces to Mary that a sword will pass through her soul. His heart does not remain protected from pain: it accompanies the rejection, Passion and death of Jesus.

That is why this invocation is close to those who suffer. Christian compassion does not observe from afar; it accepts to remain, listen and help without appropriate pain.

A parish founded in 1967

The official foundation of Yangon took place on 27 December 1967. Since then, the community has accompanied the transformation of a population from a more rural territory to a growing city.

The urban context helps to understand the place, but does not allow to attribute to the parish specific activities that sources do not document. Marian identity and historical continuity are indeed proven.

The fiftieth anniversary as a review of gratitude

In 2017 the parish celebrated its fifty years. The diocese of Busan reported on masses chaired by ancient parish priests and priests from the community, along with various initiatives of memory and thanksgiving.

A Christian anniversary is not just counting years. It invites us to recognize what has been received, to ask for forgiveness for the faults and to renew responsibility for the future.

During the commemorative Mass, the faithful offered a handwritten copy of the Old and New Testament. The gesture turns patient writing into a form of listening.

Copy does not replace the understanding or practice of the Word. It can, however, stop the haste and allow each sentence to pass through the attention and reach the heart.

A million tens of the Rosary

The diocesan chronicle also records the offering of a million tens of the Rosary. The figure expresses a prayer sustained and shared by many people.

The value of the Rosary does not depend on a numerical competition. Each ten looks at a mystery of Christ with Mary and can open up to the concrete needs of the Church and the world.

Keeping the memory of the community

The parish also presented a story of its first fifty years. Documenting names, events and efforts protects memory from oblivion.

History must be told with honesty, including limits and not just achievements. A grateful memory learns from the past without making it a closed monument.

A peace-oriented heart

Pope Francis described the Heart of Mary as a clean place where the goods of brotherhood and peace are entrusted. He clarified that consecration is not a magic formula, but a spiritual act of trust.

To come to Mary commits to abandoning indifference, to placating revenge, to learning forgiveness and to caring for wounded humanity. Prayer for peace also requires that we become a craftsman of peace.

He receives the prayer of those who have built this community for generations; he delivers our hearts from selfishness and violence, and always consumes us to Jesus Christ.
