An advocation confirmed by the Korean Church
The Episcopal Conference of Korea is a patron of Unbelievable Unbelievable Marialiterally the Blessed Virgin Mary conceived without sin. The formulation corresponds to the mystery we call Immaculate Conception in Spanish.
The direction, the founding date and the jurisdiction appear in the same episcopal record and are corroborated by the parish and the diocese of Suwon.
What the Immaculate Conception means
The Immaculate Conception refers to the beginning of Mary's life, not to the virginal conception of Jesus. The Church confesses that Mary was preserved from the original sin from the first moment of her conception, by God's grace and in anticipation of the merits of Jesus Christ.
Everything comes from Christ: Mary is not saved outside of him, but in a unique and early way. The advocation celebrates the free initiative of God and the free response of his handmaid.
A holiness received and lived
The absence of sin does not make Mary a distant figure of the human condition. She knows uncertainty, daily work, displacement and pain, but responds by trusting God.
Saving the Immaculate requires asking for a clean heart and translating that request into truth, reparation of damage, respect for dignity and service to those who suffer.
Icheon, land of mud and fire
Icheon has clay, water and wood, conditions that favored a long pottery tradition. During the persecution, some displaced Catholics found support by manufacturing vessels in remote places.
The diocesan press identifies ancient villages of believers and potters in Mojeon-ri, Sogori, Ichiri and Godam-ri. In some cases, the memory of those workshops remains even in local toponyms related to pottery.
The mud as survival work
Ceramic should not be presented as a romantic symbol that erases persecution. For many families it was a concrete way to survive after leaving home, goods and support networks.
The mud worked by vulnerable hands recalls that the Christian faith was also transmitted through humble trades, family collaboration and discrete communities.
Mission begins in 1938
The priest Peter Park Dong- heon, then responsible for Namgok- ri - the current Yangon - began the evangelization of Icheon when there were only Catholics in the urban core. In 1938, he opened a mission station.
Two years later, in 1940, the community acquired a house in Jungni and adapted it as a church. The passage from a house to a parish shows how Christian life grew before having a temple built for that purpose.
Foundation as a parish of Jungni
El 4 July 1941with the arrival of Park Dong-heon as a parish priest, the mission was erected with the name of the parish of Jungni. The episcopal directory retains this date as the official foundation of the present parish of Icheon.
The community started with about 30 people. In a few years it became a focus of evangelization for an extensive area, but the figures should be read as individuals and families, not as a measure of prestige.
A mother parish for the region
During the following decades, the growth of the territory allowed several new parishes to be born from Icheon. The historical chronicle had six separate communities in about seventy years.
Giving birth to new parishes does not mean losing life. It is a way of bringing the Eucharist, catechesis and pastoral care closer to neighborhoods and populations that can no longer be adequately served from a single centre.
The temples of 1959 and 1993
The parish dedicated a temple in 1959. The current building was consecrated in 1993, responding to the needs of the community and maintaining a visible continuity with the previous one.
Some red bricks from the 1959 temple were reused behind the altar and in the access garden. The decision turns the building itself into memory: the new does not erase the work and prayer of previous generations.
Construct sin olvidar
The reuse of bricks has a material and spiritual meaning. It recognizes that a community does not begin from scratch and that places of worship have been sustained by concrete sacrifices.
It also invites you to take care of the heritage with sobriety. The beauty of a church serves liturgy and prayer; it does not justify waste or indifference to human needs.
The development of Dannae and Eonong
In 1987, an Icheon committee was set up to develop the memory sites of Dannae and Eonong. Priests from the parish and many faithful participated in this task.
In Dannae there were memorials dedicated to martyrs associated with Icheon, including John Lee Mun-u, Pedro Lee Ho-yeong, Águeda Lee Jo- i and Pablo Jeong Eun. In Eonong, images of Blessed Pablo Yun Yu-il and Santiago Zhou Wen@-@ mo were erected.
Parish and sanctuaries are not the same
Icheon's participation in the development of these places does not make his parish temple one of them. Dannae and Eonong have their own location, history and pilgrimage function.
The marker of this page corresponds exclusively to the church of Icheon, in Jungnicheon-ro. This separation avoids attributing to Marian invocation facts that belong to the history of martyrs in other locations.
The Immaculate and the Marginal Memory
Mary responds to grace with an entire yes. The Korean martyrs, in radically different circumstances, sought to preserve that fidelity to Christ. The relationship is spiritual, not an equivalence between their lives.
Marian devotion can help to contemplate his testimony without exalting violence: those who remained faithful are honoured and work is done to ensure that no one is ever persecuted again.
Prayer with the hands of a potter
The prophet compares God to the potter and the human being to the mud. The image does not nullify our freedom: it expresses that we can let ourselves be formed, corrected and renewed by grace.
In Icheon, that metaphor acquires a local resonance. A ten of the Rosary can be offered by those who work with their hands, by the displaced and by families who support faith in difficult conditions.
verified location for the map
The episcopal directory and the parish indicate the direction 32 Jungnicheon-roin the city of Icheon. The mapping search by the Korean name and Gyeonggi-do places the temple in 37.2800122, 127.4411061.
The point coincides with the parish complex and not with the generic center of Icheon, a ceramic workshop, Dannae and Eonong.
No confundir Icheon con Incheon
icheone is a city of Gyeonggi- do and belongs ecclesiastically to the diocese of Suwon. Incheonwith an additional "n" in the romanization, it is the great port city located west of Seoul and has its own diocese.
The written similarity causes frequent errors. The Korean name, direction, jurisdiction and coordinates clearly identify this parish.
To visit and pray
Icheon is an active parish. Time and access should be confirmed before moving, respecting the celebrations and asking for permission before photographing people or pastoral activities.
He can pray to Mary for the potters who kept their families, for the martyrs, for those who raised both temples and for the peace and reconciliation of Korea.
Prayer to the Immaculate Conception of Icheon
Mary Immaculate, the work of God's grace, keeps the parish of Icheon. Remember before your Son the believers who survived by working the mud, the martyrs and those who built this community. Make us humble and docile in the hands of the Lord, clean of heart and firm in charity. It reaches reconciliation and peace for Korea. Amen.
