Jeju's first Catholic prints
The Catholic history of the island contains pre-parish presences. Jeong Nan-ju, wife of martyr Hwang Sa-yeong, was banished to Jeju after the persecution of 1801. Kim Gi-ryang, the first named Jeju natural, returned to the island and announced the faith before he died during the persecution of 1866.
These biographies should not be confused with the institutional foundation. The stable parish was born when Bishop Gustave Mutel decided to send a resident priest at the end of the 19th century.
The first parish on the island
In 1899 Father Pyenet bought a traditional house near the southern gate and adapted it as a church. That modest building became the center of the mission and origin of the present cathedralicia parish.
From this place other communities of Jeju were formed. The cathedral is therefore a mother church in the historical sense, as well as an episcopal seat in the present.
The pain of the 1901 conflict
In 1901, a serious conflict broke out known as the persecution or uprising of Jeju, a result of religious, social and political tensions. Ecclesial sources remember hundreds of dead Catholics.
Education and reconstruction of coexistence
After the conflict, the parish promoted a school for girls and other educational and self-reliance initiatives. The mission could not be rebuilt only with buildings: it needed to restore links with the population and serve the common good.
This dimension helps to understand the contemporary meaning of the cathedral as an open space in the urban heart.
The church of 1930, the "pointed temple"
In December 1930 a western church of brick and Gothic style was dedicated. It was one of the few western buildings on the island and its bell served even as a time reference for many neighbors.
The silhouette was deeply linked to collective memory. When a new building was projected decades later, it wanted to recover that vertical presence without simply copying it literally.
Occupation and war
In 1941, during Japanese rule, the church and residence were requisitioned. The temple was used as a military hospital and other units as an officer accommodation.
After the liberation, the Korean war came. Many priests, religious, seminarians and faithful sought refuge in Jeju, and their presence helped to revive the ecclesial life of the island in the midst of national suffering.
The catedral of the centenary
The present temple was conceived within the projects of the centenary of the evangelization of Jeju. The work began in August 1997 and went through the serious Asian financial crisis.
The faithful of Jungang, the parishes of the diocese, people from Jeju and non-Catholic neighbours collaborated to conclude it. It was dedicated on July 2, 2000, during the Great Jubilee.
A shared construction
The participation of Buddhists, Protestants and non-Catholic neighbours had a special value on an island marked by historical conflicts. The building became the fruit of civic and religious cooperation.
The community removed outside walls, created a small accessible park and expressed the will to welcome also non-parishioners. This openness does not erase the Catholic identity: it makes it hospitable.
Three crosses and Jeju's identity
The tower is composed of three cross elements. The number first evokes the Most Holy Trinity and, in a cultural way, several traditional sets of "three" with which Jeju is described.
The architecture thus links the universal faith of the Church with the geography and memory of the island.
What the Immaculate Conception confesses
The Immaculate Conception refers to Mary herself: from the first moment of her conception she was preserved from original sin by the singular grace of God, in anticipation of the merits of Jesus Christ.
It should not be confused with the virginal conception of Jesus. Pius IX solemnly defined this truth in 1854, showing that everything in Mary comes from the salvation made by Christ.
Mary, grace and freedom
St. John Paul II taught that the fullness of grace does not eliminate Mary's freedom. His "yes" to God is truly human, conscious and free.
In a church born between conflicts and reconstructions, this advocation invites you to receive grace and respond to it through reconciliation, service and fidelity.
Cathedral and Jubilee Temple
Jungang is the cathedral of the diocese: it contains the chair of the bishop and serves as a reference church for the diocesan community. GCatholic includes it between the 2016 and 2025 Jubilee temples.
His cathedral condition does not depend on the age or size, but on his function as an episcopal seat.

To visit and pray
The cathedral is an active church. It is appropriate to consult the times of the diocese, to respect the celebrations and to remember with sobriety the painful episodes of island history. The environment can be integrated into a walk visit through the historic places in the centre of Jeju.
There is no Marian apparition associated with the temple. The advocation comes from its liturgical and cathedral patronage.
Prayer to the Immaculate Conception of Jeju
Mary Immaculate, guard the Church of Jeju. It receives the memory of those who suffered persecution, violence, occupation and war. Bless those who raised this cathedral united beyond its differences. Teach us to respond freely to grace, repair the wounds of history and make our communities open places of truth, reconciliation and service. Lead us to Jesus Christ, the only Savior. Amen.
