Marian devotion

An expressly documented Marian dedication
The directory of the Episcopal Conference of Korea identifies the Virgin Mary conceived without original sin as her patron. The cathedral itself explains that the Church of Korea has venerated the Immaculate as a co-patron since Gregorio XVI, in response to the request of the Apostolic Vicar Imbert, established in 1841 the patronage shared with St. Joseph.
When the building was consecrated in 1898 it was offered to Mary under this title. A local apparition is not documented here: it is a liturgical, ecclesial and historical dedication.
De Myeongryebang a la sede episcopal
The area retains the memory of the first meetings of Korean believers in Myeongryebang. Before the great temple existed, faith had grown among lay people who studied, prayed and shared the Gospel in difficult conditions.
In 1882, in anticipation of greater religious freedom, Bishop Blanc acquired the land of Jonghyeon. There a school for seminarians was established and the project of a church capable of serving the Catholic community of the capital began to take shape.
A construction through difficulties
The preparation of the site was slowed by a dispute with the government related to the property and with objections of a geomantic nature. Resolved the conflict, the first stone could be placed on May 8, 1892.
Father Eugène Coste led the project, but died in 1896 before he was finished. Father Victor Louis Poisnel continued the play. Finally, on 29 May 1898, the solemnity of Pentecost, Bishop Gustave Mutel consecrated the cathedral.
The Immaculate in Advent
The solemnity is celebrated on December 8, in the heart of Advent. Consider the free initiative of God, who prepares in Mary a dwelling place for his Son and the height of grace from the beginning of his existence.

North Korea in Myeongdong's Prayer
The Archdiocese of Seoul maintains a unique spiritual responsibility towards the Church of Pyongyang. Myeongdong prays for the communities of the North, the separated families and the reconciliation of the peninsula.
Under Mary's eyes, this petition avoids making the other an abstract enemy. He calls for peace with truth, protection for those who suffer and patient paths of encounter.
The Rosary and the Immaculate
