Marian devotion
Saebanggol, in the west of Daegu, is dedicated to Immaculate Conception of Mary. Long before his modern parish configuration, he was a refuge for persecuted believers, a missionary residence and one of the first centers of the Church in the region. His memory leads from a house and a straw chapel to a community of pilgrimage.

A confirmed employer
The Episcopal Conference of Korea records Saebanggol within the archdiocese of Daegu and addresses Mary conceived without original sin as a patron. The tab also confirms the current address.
The archdiocese, the Korean Catholic Encyclopedia and the Seo district document the historical depth of the place and its status as a pilgrimage temple.
A refugee family around 1860
The encyclopedia places an antecedent during the Gyeongsin persecution of 1860. Yi Jae-yeong's family from Eogol in Chilgok sought refuge in Saebanggol.
The story also retains the memory of his wife, Maria Kim, whose faith influenced her husband's conversion. The transmission of the Gospel began here through a family before there was a parish structure.
Father Achille Robert in 1887
French missionary Achille Robert - Kim Bo-rok in Korean - left Sinamugol in the care of another priest and moved his residence to the house of Francisco Yi Jang- eon in Saebanggol.
He acquired a straw house and made it a temporary chapel. From there he developed the mission that would be decisive for the Church of Daegu.
Antecedent of the parish of Gyesan
The municipal sources describe Saebanggol as a direct antecedent of the church of Gyesan. In 1891 Father Robert moved his residence to Daeeobeol, in the central area of Daegu, and Saebanggol was linked to that parish.
This does not make both temples the same place. Saebanggol retains its own history and marker, while Gyesan later developed its cathedral identity.
The Daegu crisis of 1891
Father Robert was temporarily expelled by the provincial authority in a conflict known as the Catholic incident in Daegu. Then he was able to return and the ecclesial presence gained greater recognition.
The memory recalls a faith that went through cultural and political tension. It must be told without contempt to Korea or simplifications about that period.
A growing mission
After the transfer of the priest, the mission continued to grow: the encyclopedia recorded 96 faithful in 1892 and 170 in 1909, then one of the largest missionary communities in Daegu.
In 1910, the secular leader Yi Gyu@-@ seong acquired the current ground and prepared a living room. In 1925, more land was added and the Community area was reformed.
Changes in pastoral dependence
Saebanggol was linked to Gyesan and, since the creation of the parish of Bisan- dong in 1927, became dependent on the latter.
These changes did not erase your own memory. They show how a mission can be part of different pastoral networks before achieving autonomy.
Three modern dates to be distinguished
The episcopal directory offers the 20 November 1963. The encyclopedia explains that that day was blessed a room of about 45 pyeong, while the configuration as a quasi-parish of Sang-ri occurred the 14 December 1963.
The elevation to full parish came the 6 January 1974. Presenting the three dates prevents confusing building, pastoral organization and canonical erection.
What the Immaculate Conception means
The Church confesses that Mary, from the first moment of her conception, was preserved from original sin by God's grace and in anticipation of the merits of Christ.
It should not be confused with the virginal conception of Jesus. The Immaculate Conception refers to the beginning of Mary's life.
Everything comes from grace
The dogma proclaimed by Pius IX does not present Mary as someone who saved herself. It affirms the absolute primacy of Christ's grace.
Their purity is not proud isolation. It is available to receive the Word and to serve others.
A temple of pilgrimage
Saebanggol was included in the 2019 revised edition of the Korean Catholic pilgrimage guide. The archdiocese presents it as a historic site linked to Father Robert's mission.
The pilgrimage must seek prayer and memory, not tourism consumption. The visitor reaches a living parish and a place of special historical value.
Laics who support the Church
History retains the names of families, owners and lay leaders. Without its hospitality, perseverance and land supply, the mission would not have grown in the same way.
Saebanggol recalls that ecclesial history does not belong only to the clergy. lay women and men passed on faith in houses and communities.
Hate-free persecution report
The origin among refugees forces us to remember the human cost of persecution. Fidelity is honoured today by defending the freedom of conscience of all.
The Christian memory must not feed cultural contempt or desire for rematch. He seeks truth, reconciliation and dignity.
verified location for the map
The Episcopal Conference, the Archdiocese and the Seo district coincide in 9 Saebang 27-gil. The nominal map identifies Saebanggol Catholic Church en 35.8676849, 128.5284794.
The marker corresponds to this historic temple of Seo-gu, not to Gyesan or to another parish of Daegu dedicated to the Immaculate.
To pilgrim and pray
It is appropriate to consult directly hours, conditions of pilgrimage and possible guided tours. The community deserves silence and respect during veneration.
You can thank the families who guarded the faith, pray for those who suffer persecution and ask for a heart available to grace.
Prayer to the Immaculate Conception of Saebanggol

Teach us to receive the grace of Christ, to serve with humility and to defend the freedom and dignity of every person. Amen.
