Immaculate Conception of Wangnim - The ancient community of Gatdeungi

Wangnim retains one of the oldest roots of the Church in the Suwon region. Before the parish, the Catholics of Gatdeungi They lived there in times of persecution. The present community is entrusted to the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary.

The Gatdeungi community

The exact moment when the Catholic presence began is not known with certainty. A diary of Bishop Laurent Imbert, dated January 1839, mentions the mission station of Gatdeungi. The researchers put the formation of the Christian village around the beginning of the 19th century.

During the persecutions many families were dispersed, but the community reorganized when the missionaries were able to return. The statistics of 1881-1882 record over a hundred faithful in Gatdeungi.

The passage of Bishop Imbert

The ecclesiastical sources allow to place a visit by Monsignor Imbert in January 1839. Shortly after he returned to Seoul in the middle of the persecution and was martyred in Saenamteo on September 21.

At present, a hair attributed to the holy bishop is kept under the altar. His presence links the temple to those who secretly served Christians, but does not turn the Marian tab into a biography of the martyr: the center remains the head of the parish.

On July 14, 1888, the French missionary Jacques André arrived as the first priest. Wangnim was separated from Myeongdong and became the first stable parish in Gyeonggi province south of the Han River.

The community served an immense territory that included parts of Suwon, Yongin, Anseong and Pyeongtaek. In 1889 he had twenty-four chapels and about 1,790 faithful.

Four temples over time

The first parish temple was a church with straw cover capable of receiving some 200 people. In 1901-1902 a large traditional Korean church of thirty-three crunches was erected, accompanied by a priestly residence.

In 1971 it was replaced by a brick building. The present church began to be used on 25 November 1986 and was solemnly dedicated during the parish centenary on 1 November 1988.

The traditional residence preserved

The old priestly residence of 1902 survived and was restored in accordance with its original form in 1982. In the garden are tombstones of two ancient parish priests, while their remains rest in the priestly cemetery of the diocese.

This house is not just a picturesque element: it testifies to the encounter between the Catholic mission and the Korean architecture, as well as the daily life of the priests who went through the rural chapels.

A parish that taught to read

Wangnim founded a school of Chinese characters to combat illiteracy and sustain evangelization. With different names, the institution continued to serve the faithful and the neighbours for decades.

The educational site ended up linked to the Catholic University of Suwon, dedicated to priestly formation. The long concern to teach thus became a service to vocations and to the entire local Church.

Mother of new parishes

From Wangnim communities such as Mirinae, Buksudong, Balan, Namyang, Jeongnam and Bongdam were born. This development explains why the parish is considered a historical matrix of the diocese of Suwon.

The term "first parish" refers to this specific regional jurisdiction. It should not be confused with the oldest Catholic communities in all Korea or with a cathedral condition.

Current patronage and historical evolution

The historical encyclopedia records that in 1890 a parish priest pointed to the Sacred Heart of Jesus as patron. The current official directory, on the other hand, identifies the Immaculate Conception and sets its feast on December 8.

What the Immaculate Conception means

The Immaculate Conception does not refer to the virginal conception of Jesus. She confesses that Mary, from the first moment of her own conception, was preserved from original sin by God's grace and in anticipation of the merits of Jesus Christ.

Pius IX solemnly defined this truth in 1854. Everything comes from God's saving initiative: Mary is redeemed in a unique way and prepared to respond freely to her vocation.

Grace and freedom

John Paul II explained that the fullness of grace does not suppress Mary's freedom. His response in the Annunciation is fully human and free, sustained by the gift of God.

In Wangnim, the advocation invites you to contemplate this availability in a community that went through persecutions, reconstructions and social changes without abandoning the Gospel.

An image of the community before Mary

In the enclosure stands a sculpture where men, women and a lamb appear to pray before an image of the Virgin. The composition represents community faith rather than a historical apparition.

There is no Marian apparition associated with Wangnim in the sources. The devotion comes from the parish patronage, the liturgy and the constant prayer of the faithful.

Place of pilgrimage and diocesan road

The diocese declared Wangnim its first historical place of pilgrimage and integrated it into its walking routes. It was also selected as a Jubilee temple for the Holy Year of 2025.

To visit and pray

Wangnim is an active parish and diocesan pilgrimage place. The official hours should be consulted before they come. The old residence, the tombstones and relics must be visited with respect and without disturbing the celebrations.

The party is on December 8. The place invites us to pray for the fidelity of the persecuted Christians and for priestly and religious vocations.

Mary Immaculate, protects the ancient community of Gatdeungi and the parish of Wangnim. He receives the memory of those who kept faith in persecution, of the missionaries who walked their ways and of those who taught to read and pray.
