Marian devotion
Next to the Yangwon station in the eastern district of Jungnang, a parish of Seoul is dedicated to the Immaculate Conception of the Virgin Mary. The community was born under the name Mangwoo 1-dong and later assumed the name of the place in which it is recognized today.

Unambiguous Marian dedication
The directory of the Episcopal Conference of Korea records the "Blessed Virgin Mary conceived without original sin." The Korean formula accurately reproduces the content of the doctrine of the Immaculate Conception.
Two additional Catholic directories corroborate identity, direction, foundation and patronage. This is not an advocation derived from an image, but from the official dedication of the parish.
What the Immaculate Conception Celebrates
The Immaculate Conception refers to the conception of Mary, not to the virginal conception of Jesus. She claims that, from the first moment of her existence, Mary was preserved from original sin by a unique grace of God, in anticipation of the merits of Jesus Christ.
Mary is also redeemed by Christ, but in a preventive and full way. Everything comes from grace; doctrine does not present a perfection conquered outside the Saviour.
«Llena de gracia»
The angel's greeting in Nazareth expresses a life inhabited by God's favor. The Catholic tradition recognizes in that fullness of grace a light to understand the original holiness of Mary.
Pope Francis has described his humanity as harmony, simplicity, transparency and beauty. These gifts do not drive her away from the human condition; they show what grace can do in a creature fully open to God.
Grace and freedom
Being preserved from sin does not make Mary an instrument without will. His "yes" remains free and goes through concrete decisions throughout his life.
Grace does not nullify freedom: it is healthy and able to love. This advocation therefore invites us to ask for a heart free from selfishness, not a life without responsibility.
De Mono 1-nong a Yangwon
The parish was founded in 2005 under the name Mangwoo 1-dong. Current sources still retain the previous name in parentheses to avoid administrative and historical confusion.
A local chronicle places the change to "Yangon" in 2016. A public act of the Jungnang district, written before the change, confirms the presence of the Catholic church of Mangwoo 1-dong in the same surroundings of Yangon-ri.
A change that does not erase memory
Adopting a new name can reflect the transformation of the neighborhood and the way its inhabitants identify the place. The continuity of leadership, community and patronage allows us to recognize that a different parish was not born.
Keeping the previous name in the directories is a useful practice. It helps those who seek old documents and avoids counting twice a single advocation on the map.
A parish by the station
Yangwon is located next to a station on the Gyeongui-Jungang line and near residential areas developed over the last decades. Accessibility and urban growth have changed the local landscape.

A Marian garden and windows open to light
An independent photographic chronicle describes a Marian garden with an image of the Virgin and the Child, accompanied by large glass surfaces on the western and southern sides of the building.

An advocation linked to Korea
The Immaculate Conception has a special historical relevance for the Church in Korea. Long before the dogmatic definition of 1854, the pastors of the Korean mission requested that Mary conceived without sin be recognized as a patron.
The parish of Yangon is thus inserted into a devotion that is not merely imported in recent times, but rooted in the Catholic memory of the country.
