Immaculate Heart of Mary of Daeya - A parish among the Arrozals of Gunsan

In the large agricultural plain located to the east of Gunsan, the parish of Daeya is entrusted to the Immaculate Heart of Mary. Since 1956 it has been accompanied by a population spread by several rural municipalities, where planting, water and the waiting for harvest are part of daily life.

A patronage confirmed by the Korean Church

The Episcopal Conference of Korea records the parish with the expression The Holy Spiritwhich means Immaculate Heart of Mary. The diocese of Jeonju confirms the same patronage, the date of foundation and the direction.

This coincidence makes it possible to speak of a documented parochial dedication, not of a name attributed by a tourist guide or of an alleged apparition. Daeya is a Catholic community of Roman rite under a recognized Marian title.

A parish born in 1956

Daeya was erected 20 April 1956. The diocesan file places it in the fifth pastoral district and documents the presence of the Sisters of the Immaculate Heart of Mary of Mirinae.

His responsibility does not end at the core of Daeya. The diocese lists six municipalities within its territory: Daeya, Gaejeong, Impi, Seosu, Hoehyeon and Seongsan. This breadth helps to understand the rural and dispersed nature of the community.

Daeya, la "gran llanura"

Gunsan's administration explains that the name Daeya refers to a wide field. The area opens on an extensive rice plain and functions as the eastern gate of the city, next to the communications leading to Iksan.

The same municipal source points to about 2,400 hectares dedicated to rice and recalls the traditional five-day market. The church is therefore inserted into a territory where agriculture, neighbouring exchange and village-to-village displacements have shaped local life.

What the heart of Mary means

In the Bible, the heart designates the center of the person: there the memory is kept, the will of God is discerned and decisions are made. St. Luke presents Mary by preserving and meditating in his heart the words and events of Jesus.

Honoring the Immaculate Heart does not mean separating an organ from the person from the Virgin. Devotion contemplates his inner life entirely open to grace: his listening, his freedom, his compassion and his fidelity to the cross.

A memory that becomes service

John Paul II explained that Mary advanced on her pilgrimage of faith by meditating on the facts of her Son's life. His recollection was not isolation: he encouraged her to visit Elizabeth, to warn the need for Cana and to remain with those who suffered.

A parish dedicated to his heart is called to listen with the same attention. In a territory of scattered population, listening is made to the elderly, care of those living alone and accompaniment of the families who work the land.

The spirituality of the seed

The landscape of Daeya helps to read the parables of the Gospel. The seed disappears under the earth before bearing fruit; the farmer works and waits; the harvest depends on a humble collaboration with time, water and creation.

Mary also welcomed the Word in silence and allowed it to bear fruit in her life. His Heart teaches a patient hope, away from both resignation and impatience.

Reparation, peace and reconciliation

The tradition of the Immaculate Heart unites prayer to conversion, reparation and peace. Repair is not to feed fear, but to respond to harm with truth, repentance, justice and concrete works of love.

On the Korean peninsula, this intention takes on particular meaning. The prayer for reconciliation calls for the wounds of the division not to be forgotten or used to perpetuate hatred, and for separate families to keep hope.

To care for the land and to those who cultivate it

Mary's veneration in an aroque region invites us to thank the food and to protect the land that produces it. Water, fertile soil and human work are neither infinite resources nor mere economic figures.

The Christian community can live this vocation by avoiding waste, accompanying older farmers, supporting families in difficulty and ensuring that progress does not break the links between generations.
