In the eastern part of Jeju, the parish of Donggwang is entrusted to Immaculate Heart of Mary. His title invites him to contemplate the inner life of the Mother of Jesus: an entirely open heart to God, who listens to the Word, preserves events and is given to service.

A parish born in 1995
The diocese began in February 1995 to prepare a new community to attend to the Catholic growth of this part of the city. Donggwang was canonically erected on April 30 of that year and received faithful and territory from the parishes of Dongmun and Gwangyang.
The new temple was completed and was dedicated on 3 October 1995. The proximity of the dates shows a concentrated process, sustained by previous communities and aimed at creating a stable pastoral presence.
The meaning of the Immaculate Heart
The advocation addresses the heart of Mary as a biblical expression of all her person: her faith, her affections, her freedom and her response to God. The Gospel presents it by keeping and meditating in its heart how much it lives with Jesus.
The word "immaculate" proclaims the action of grace in Mary and the purity of her surrender. The word "heart" avoids reducing the title to an abstract idea: it speaks of a concrete life that listens, suffers, expects and loves.
An ecclesial devotion
Pius XII explained the union between the Heart of Mary and that of his Son, and John Paul II renewed the Church's dedication to the Mother of Christ. This tradition does not separate Mary from Jesus: it leads to the Gospel with the same availability as it.
Authentic devotion is translated into conversion, prayer and charity. Honoring Mary's heart means learning from her listening and allowing the Word to transform ordinary relationships.
Care of the neighborhood
The Donggwang community has been continuously involved in cleaning up the neighborhood. The Catholic press has documented this service from the early years of the initiative, not as an isolated act, but as a regular practice of common responsibility.
This simple gesture expresses an incarnate spirituality: to take care of the shared streets, to collaborate with the neighbors and to make visible a faith that serves without seeking to be a protagonist.
The memory of the elders turned into art
In 2019 the parish hosted an exhibition born of work with the elderly. His stories and memories were made images, objects and meeting spaces; non-Catholic neighbours also participated.
The initiative recognizes that every life has a valuable history. Under the title of the Heart of Mary, this attention to memory acquires a special echo: Mary keeps the events without appropriating them and contemplates them in the light of God.
A community received from other communities
Donggwang was not born isolated. Its territory came from Dongmun and Gwangyang, whose families and pastoral structures prepared the way. To remember this origin avoids understanding a parish only as a building and allows it to be seen as a communion transmitted.
Marian patronage helps to preserve this gratitude and to welcome those who come later, forming a community capable of uniting memory and renewal.

To visit and pray
Donggwang is an active parish, not a museum or a place of alleged apparitions. It is appropriate to consult the times of the diocese and to respect the celebrations and activities of the community.
The visit can be accompanied by Luke 2, 19 and 2, 51. These verses present Mary keeping in her heart what she still needs to fully understand.
Prayer to the Immaculate Heart of Mary of Donggwang
Mary, Mother of an immaculate heart, accompanies the community of Donggwang. Teach us to keep the Word, to listen to the memory of our elders and to serve our neighbours with humility. It purifies our intentions, comforts those who suffer and leads our lives to Jesus. May our homes and streets be places of meeting, care and peace. Amen.
