The antigua capilla de Suwon

In 1903 the diocese established a missionary station called Suwon in the Hanrim region. The name should not be confused with the great city of Suwon on the Korean peninsula: here he designated a local community of Jeju.

That first presence ended up closing. The available sources do not allow for the reconstruction of each year of the interruption, so the file does not present an institutional continuity.

A community restored in 1951

In April 1951, the Hanrim missionary station was reorganized, then linked to the Quasiparish of Sinchang. The context was that of the Korean war and the arrival in Jeju of many displaced persons.

The recovery of a stable Catholic community was a new beginning on an earlier memory, not a simple administrative reopening.

Parish Erection in 1954

On 1 April 1954 Hanrim was raised to parish. For a time the reorganisation made Sinchang stay a dependent station, until he recovered his parish status in 1957.

Hanrim attended a large area and then transferred or separated communities as the local Church grew. The diocese today points to eighteen villages within its pastoral territory.

The title of the Immaculate Heart

The Korean expression literally means "the heart of Mary completely pure and blemish." The liturgical date offered by the diocese - Saturday after the Sacred Heart - confirms that it is the Immaculate Heart of Mary.

doctrinal distinction: It is not the Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception of December 8. One advocation contemplates the believing heart of Mary; the other, the grace received from the first moment of her conception.

The heart that keeps the Word

Luke presents Mary by keeping and meditating in her heart what was happening around Jesus. His internality is not isolation: he listens to the Word and allows him to determine his decisions.

Mary's heart also knows the pain announced by Simeon. It can therefore accompany communities that have experienced interruption, war, separation and reconstruction.

Unite to the Heart of Christ

The memory is held immediately after the Sacred Heart of Jesus to express the Mother's union with the mission of her Son. Mary does not occupy a parallel center: she leads to Christ and shares his compassion.

Pius XII promoted this Marian trust in close relation to peace and Christian renewal. John Paul II recalled that giving himself to the Heart of Mary means renewing the baptismal orientation towards Jesus.

A spirituality to rekindle

Hanrim's history teaches that a community can disappear institutionally and yet leave a seed capable of being reborn. Christian memory does not idealize the past: it receives what was true and assumes the responsibility of the present.

The Immaculate Heart invites us to rekindle from listening, reconciliation and daily service.

A parish inside the island

Hanrim belongs to the diocese of Jeju and serves a coastal and rural territory. New delimitations and communities emerged from his organization, including the separation of Geumak and adjustments related to Aewol and Hagwi.

These changes do not diminish their identity; they show the ripening of the Church in the west of the island.

Verified location

The diocese provides the official direction in 20 Hansupul-ro. GCatholic records the territorial code 8Q58C798+36the centre is 33,4176875, 126,2655625.

To visit and pray

Hanrim is an active parish. It is appropriate to consult the times of the diocese and to respect the liturgical life of the community. The patron feast is held on the Saturday after the Sacred Heart of Jesus.

No local Marian apparition is documented. Devotion is born from the parish title and the liturgy of the Church.

Prayer to the Immaculate Heart of Mary of Hanrim

Mary, with a pure and immaculate heart, keeps the community of Hanrim. He receives the memory of the ancient chapel of Suwon and blesses those who rebuilt the parish in difficult times. Teach us to keep the Word, to remain united to the Heart of Jesus and to rekindle with humility when history hurts us. Make us instruments of comfort and peace on the island of Jeju. Amen.
