A confirmed advocation
The directory of the Korean Episcopal Conference expressly identifies the The Holy Spirit without Teathe Heart of Mary clean of all blemish, as the patronage of Yongsan. Good News Catholic confirms the same dedication.
There is no local Marian apparition or private revelation of the place. Documented reality is a parish community consecrated to the Immaculate Heart of the Mother of Jesus.
The heart in the biblical language
In Scripture, the heart designates the center of the person: memory, will, affections and decisions. The devotion to the Heart of Mary is not limited to an organ or a passing feeling.
He contemplates his inner life completely God-oriented: he listens to the Word, preserves it, discerns it and responds freely.
A heart united with Christ
The Second Vatican Council recalls that Mary welcomed the saving will of God with all her heart and gave herself to the person and work of her Son. His motherhood never competes with Christ's only mediation.
Authentic devotion leads to the knowledge and imitation of Jesus. It does not make Mary a separate divinity or replace the sacraments and the Gospel.
The heart crossed
Simeon announced that a sword would pass through Mary's soul. At the foot of the cross, his maternal heart participated in the Son's pain without transforming suffering into a good sought for himself.
This image does not justify taking abuses in silence. To love faithfully includes protecting those in danger, reporting the damage and seeking truth, justice and reparation.
Consecration that makes life
St. John Paul II taught that the dedication to the Immaculate Heart must be translated into a new way of living for God and to continue the love of Jesus to his Mother.
It's not a magic formula or an automatic guarantee. It requires conversion, confident prayer, imitation of their virtues and concrete service to others.
The enclosure before the parish
In March 1887, the Apostolic Vicariate of Korea bought land and houses in the Hambyeokjeong area and moved the school of the Sacred Heart of Jesus there.
This data belongs to the historical set of Yongsan. The old seminar is today in another nearby home and does not share the marker of this parish.
Samhojeong Station
By May 1890, the Samhojeong missionary station, also called Yongsan, was established in the main house of an old pavilion. The parish history numbers that community in about 150 faithful.
Since November 1891 he has been dependent on the parish of Yakhyeon, today Jungnim-dong Yakhyeon. The houses and the initiative of the laity thus preceded the parish structure.
The Church of the Heart of Mary of 1926
In February 1926, a youth section of Yakhyeon was born in Yongsan. The 25 July of that year A church called "Church of the Heart of Mary" was opened.
The temple, about thirty pyeng, gave a stable form to an advocation that the parish continues to preserve.
From station to parish
The chronology itself places Yongsan's erection at the end of January 1942, using the old chapel of the station as a parish church. His first responsibility was Bishop Adrien Larribeau.
The episcopal directory shows "1941.01," while other official Catholic sources speak of January 1942. This documentary discrepancy remains visible without making a conciliation.
Occupation during the colonial period
At the end of the Japanese occupation, the building was requisitioned and used as an anti-aircraft position. The faithful had to participate in the Mass in the church of the Seminary of the Sacred Heart.
History helps to understand that a temple may temporarily lose its use, while the community is still alive in other spaces.
The Korean War
Around July 1950, during the Korean war, the church was hit and damaged. The parish priest Leo Jeong Gyu-ryang was injured and hospitalized.
To remember these facts calls for prayer for the civilian population, for separated families and for peace that does not depend on forgetting suffering.
The tower of 1954
The bell tower, built in 1954, became one of Yongsan's recognizable signs. The parish description indicates that their bells sound daily at the time of the Angelus.
The call recalls the Incarnation in the middle of a city marked by accelerated urban changes.
The present temple of 1989
The current church was built in 1989. The building brings together classrooms and rooms on the lower floor, community living room on the second and the temple with offices on the third.
The chronology records that the old temple was disassembled in 1992 to expand the courtyard and perform gardening works.
The Priestly Cemetery
Inside the compound is the Priestly Cemetery of Yongsan, included by the Episcopal Conference in its national relationship of sanctuaries, martyrdom places and pilgrimage destinations.
It is a resting place for figures of modern Catholic history in Korea and a space of prayer for the deceased. His dignity demands silence and respect, not invasive curiosity.
Memory without idealization
Honoring those who served the Church does not require any historical action to be presented as perfect. Archives, testimonies and studies must allow a truthful memory, capable of gratitude and also of learning.
The cemetery is not a proof of Marian apparition and does not alter the parish nature of the advocation.
A mother parish
Yongsan gave rise to new parishes as the Catholic population grew. Good News documents the separation of Gongdeok-dong in 1969 and Sinsu-dong in 1971.
This territorial fertility completes the history of a community that was born itself as a Yakhyeon dependent station.
The current community
The consulted episcopal directory records 6,227 faithful, three priests and the presence of the Sisters of St. Paul of Chartres. It does not indicate current dependent stations.
These are pastoral data subject to updating. The official phone is 02-719-3301; the hours must be confirmed before travelling.
verified location for the map
The official address is 37 Hyochangwon-ro 15-gil, plot 2-11 of Sancheon-dong. The Korean address record identifies the building as Yongsan Catholic Church and provides 37.537024422005, 126.95351792223.
The marker points to the parish complex and the priestly cemetery. It does not correspond to the old Wonhyo-ro seminary, the military cathedral or the geometric center of the district.
To visit and pray
It is appropriate to call before, respect the celebrations and maintain the collection in the funeral area. The photographs of graves or visitors require caution and consent when identifiable persons appear.
He can pray for the dead priests, for the victims of war, for the reconciliation of Korea and for those who today seek a heart capable of listening without indifference.
Prayer to the Immaculate Heart of Mary of Yongsan
Mary, Mother of Jesus, with a clean and faithful heart, keeps the community of Yongsan. Teach us to preserve the Word, to discern with freedom and to serve without seeking recognition. He welcomes the memory of those who rest in this place, comforts the victims of war and accompanies the separate families. Make our hearts a dwelling place for Christ and a safe haven for those who suffer. Amen.
