Mother of God of Eumseong - A parish born of the faith of the descendants of martyrs

Marian devotion

← Volver to Korea del Sur

In Eumseong, in central South Korea, a Catholic community keeps the memory of those who kept the faith during the persecution and helped heal the wounds of the war. The parish has as its patron Mary under the title of Mother of God, a Marian confession that leads directly to the mystery of Jesus Christ.

A Marian patronazgo confirmado

The directory of the Episcopal Conference of Korea identifies the community as a parish of the diocese of Cheongju and expressly records the patronage 천"Mother of God." The founding date and direction are corroborated by the Korean Catholic directory.

It is not a title attributed by similarity or an automatic translation of uncertain use: it is the ecclesial dedication published for this parish.

Historical precision: Eumseong is not documented as a place of Marian apparition. This page contains a parish dedicated to the Mother of God and the history of faith of the territory it serves.

Why the Church Calls Mary the Mother of God

The title does not claim that Mary is the origin of divinity. He confesses that the Son who was born of her is one person, true God and true man. That is why the ancient Church recognized Mary as Theotokos"the one who gave birth to God."

The Catechism teaches that Mary is truly the Mother of God because she is the mother of the eternal Son made man. Marian devotion, thus understood, protects the truth about Christ and leads to worship.

The first seeds of faith in Eumseong

The local Catholic history dates back to five families of St. John Nam Jong-sam. Nam Yeong-won, Nam Hae--won, Nam Chang-won, Nam Sang-o and Nam Seok-geun took refuge, fleeing persecution, in Chansaemtteul, today Sincheon-ri, within Eumseong-eup.

In 1901, the first parish priest of Janghowon, the current Gamgok, established the mission station of Chansaemtteul. Nam Seok@-@ geun also visited other populations to announce the faith.

A faith kept under occupation

The memory gathered in the parish history narrates that the Japanese police questioned the faithful after the priest's visits. Some masses were held at night to avoid surveillance.

This resistance should not become an imprecise legend: the source retains it through the family testimony cited in the history of the fifty years of the parish. His courage is to show a faith lived with perseverance and without violence.

The Rosary's Prayer in Family Memory

The same chronicle reminds an old grandmother who, even with blindness and serious limitations, devoted the day to the Rosary and asked for the priestly vocation of her grandson. That grandson would become Bishop Gabriel Chang Bong@-@ hun, from Chansaemtteul.

The scene uniquely links the patronage of the Mother of God with a domestic tradition: faith is transmitted not only through buildings, but also through the persevering prayer of families.

The war and the mission to heal

During the Korean war, the Gam@-@ ujae battle and the bombing devastated the region and caused numerous civilian casualties. The faithful of Jeommal Station returned after being displaced and resumed community prayer.

The source especially highlights the young people who taught children catechesis and received new baptized. The community took root not by ignoring the wounds, but by accompanying them through faith and service.

Foundation of the parish in 1954

The impulse of those faithful led Maryknoll's missionary J. V. Pardy to visit Eumseong and prepare the parish erection. After the creation of the ecclesiastical vicariate of Chungcheongbuk- do in 1953, Eumseong was one of his first new parishes, founded the 22 October 1954.

The parish precedes the independence of the Apostolic Vicariate of Cheongju, established in 1958. The history of the present diocese is therefore very early.

Small rural communities

Eumseong has attended mission stations scattered throughout the territory. The story of Bocheon shows how this evangelization worked: the mission was entrusted in 1956 to John Yeon Gu-hui and, by 1958, was already among the communities dependent on the parish.

The faithful made ground bricks for the building dedicated in 1963. As the land was affected by the duplication of the railway line, they built another oratory, blessed in April 1979 by Bishop Nicolás Cheong-Jin@-@ suk and subsequently reformed.

Mary in the life of missions

The Bocheon chronicle documents images of the Virgin in the front and back courtyards of the oratory and describes a deep-rooted Marian piety. It does not make Bocheon an apparition or a recognized sanctuary.

This detail helps to understand how the patronage of the mother parish is extended in rural communities through prayer, temple care and transmission between generations.

Sixty years: Scripture, Rosary and mission

In 2014 the parish celebrated its sixtieth anniversary with a mass of thanksgiving. The preparation included improvements to their mission stations, handwritten copy of Holy Scripture, spiritual reading and accompanying commitments to new faithful and remote people.

The community also offered 1,500,000 tens of the Rosary. The figure, documented by the Catholic press, expresses a shared prayer; its Christian sense always depends on the attention to Christ and the conversion of life.

Memory of the martyrs

The 2014 celebrations especially recalled Pablo Lee Guk-seung, linked to Eumseong and included among the 124 Korean martyrs whose beatification was then prepared. A community representation brought his testimony to the faithful.

Marginal memory is not nostalgia for suffering. It calls for the defence of dignity, religious freedom, truth and peace without hatred for anyone.

The Rosary contemplates Jesus Christ

St. John Paul II explained that the Rosary has a Marian form and a Christological heart. With Mary are the incarnation, the ministry, the passion and the glory of the Lord.

In Eumseong you can pray by reminding the persecuted families, the victims of the war, who reconstructed the communities and who today hold the faith in rural areas.

verified location for the map

The Episcopal Conference places the temple in 11 Son-ro 57beon-gil, Eumseong-eup. The mapping search by the Korean name and the province returns the point 36.9312643, 127.6878312, match that address.

The marker corresponds to the parish temple, not to the administrative centre of Eumseong-gun or to one of its mission stations.

Do not confuse with Gamgok- Maegoe or Maengdong

In the same county there are other Marian dedications. Gamgok-Maegoe is a parish and sanctuary dedicated to Our Lady of the Rosary; Maengdong is dedicated to the Nativity of Mary.

Eumseong has own direction, history, coordinates and patronage: Mother of God. The three chips are kept separate so as not to mix places or traditions.

To visit and pray

It's an active parish, not a tourist attraction. Before moving it is appropriate to confirm schedules and access with the community, because they can change. During the celebrations, silence must be respected and people should not be photographed without permission.

A visit can unite the profession of faith - Jesus is true God and true man - with a ten of the Rosary for the victims of war, vocations, families and reconciliation of the Korean peninsula.

Prayer to the Mother of God of Eumseong

Holy Mary, Mother of God, keeps the community of Eumseong. You who received the Word made flesh, teach us to listen to your Son and to serve him in those who suffer. Hold the families, keep the memory of the martyrs, comfort the wounds of war and achieve reconciliation and peace for Korea. Amen.
