The Korean title formulation
The official patronage is expressed as Christianity"Mary, help the Christians." It corresponds to the Latin title Auxilium Christianorum and to the Spanish acvocation Maria Auxiliadora.
The name places the help of Mary within the Christian community and always in dependence on Jesus Christ, the only Savior.
Ancient roots of an extended advocation
The Church has for centuries invoked Mary as the help of the Christian people. The title entered the laurean litany and its liturgical memory is celebrated on May 24.
St. John Bosco especially spread this devotion in the 19th century, but did not invent it. The ecclesial trust in Mary's maternal help predates the Salesian work.
Help that leads to Christ
Mary's intercession does not replace God's grace or human responsibility. She helps as a mother and disciple, leading to obey the Gospel and to support those who need it.
Leo XIII invoked Mary as a helper of the Christian people and linked her help to the unity, prayer and mission of the Church.
A community in a rural and coastal territory
Goheung is located in a region of peninsulas and islands in the south of Jeolla. The parish temple is in Goheung-eup and is a stable point of Catholic life in a less urban environment than Gwangju.
