Marian devotion
The parish of Seo-Hanam, in the eastern part of the Seoul metropolitan area, has as its patron Mary Help of Christians. Founded in 1988 and previously known as Seobu, its recent history is marked by the perseverance of a community without a definitive temple.

A confirmed employer
The Episcopal Conference of Korea and the diocese of Suwon agree to identify Mary Help of Christians as a patron. The diocese also marks May 24 as a patron party.
The title expresses the Church's confidence in the maternal intercession of Mary, always dependent on and oriented towards Jesus Christ.
Founded as Seobu in 1988
The parish was erected 24 February 1988. A diocesan chronicle of 2021 calls it Seobu, the name before the current Seo- Hanam.
The change of name does not create a different parish. The date, patronage and pastoral continuity allow for the recognition of the same community through its successive denominations and headquarters.
A parish in difficult territory
The diocese explained that Seobu attended five large neighborhoods, most of them affected by green belt restrictions. These conditions limited the possibilities of acquiring and building.
The land used then was partially rented and divided into plots, so it was not suitable to build a stable temple.
The ancient provisional temple
In 2021 the community held a temporary construction of panels, small for their needs. It had to offer five Sunday masses, a difficulty aggravated by the health measures of the pandemic.
The chronicle does not break the precariousness. It documents the efforts of the faithful and priests to maintain the sacramental life as they sought an appropriate solution.
Solidarity between parishes
Upon learning about pastoral and economic difficulties, priests from the Suji district gathered help for Seobu. The diocese presented the gesture as fraternity between communities.
Mary Auxiliary inspires precisely a help that is not left in words: to recognize a need and share resources without humiliating those who receive them.
The growth of Gamil
The urbanization on the other side of the Seo- Hanam link created new pastoral needs. The newly arrived Catholic families found access barriers to the former headquarters.
The current direction in Gamil-dong approaches the parish to this new residential environment. The available sources do not make it possible to claim that it is already a definitive temple; therefore it is sobriously described as the current parish seat.
Mary Help of Christians
The invocation has ancient roots in the prayer of the Church and acquired special dissemination in the Salesian tradition. He recognizes Mary as a mother who accompanies the disciples in the trials.
John Paul II recalled that the Church has entrusted great events to whom she calls as the Help of Christians and the Help of Pastors.
Help comes from Christ
Mary does not replace the saving action of Jesus. His intercession is maternal, created and subordinate to the only Mediator.
The invocation is well understood in Cana: Mary presents the need and leads to doing what Christ says. The center is still the Son.
Help in precariousness
The story of Seo- Hanam offers a concrete reading of patronage. A community that calls for help also learns to receive and lend help.
The lack of its own building does not diminish its ecclesial dignity. The Church is made up of people gathered in the faith, even though it needs safe and adequate spaces to celebrate and serve.

The diocese consulted records 1,531 faithful. This figure is dynamic and should not be compared without context with the approximately 150 Sunday assistants mentioned during the difficulties of 2021.
