In Sorokdo, an island marked by the history of Hansen's disease, segregation and also persevering care, the Catholic parish has as its patron Mary, Consoladora de los Afligidos. The title does not invite you to break the pain, but to look at each person with dignity and turn comfort into a presence, justice and service.

An officially confirmed advocation

The Korean Episcopal Conference records the Consoladora of the Afflids as the patron of Sorokdo. It also confirms the direction, jurisdiction and founding date.

The title belongs to the Laurean Lethanias and has a wide tradition in the Church. In this place it acquires a concrete resonance, but it should not be used to define residents only for their suffering.

The history of the Catholic community

A source of the Archdiocese places the beginning of the Catholic presence organized in 1935, when Jang Sun-eop Francisco entered Sorokdo. The episcopal directory established the parish foundation in 1961.

The Archdiocese documents that the temple used since 1961 was reformed and rededicated in 2015. These dates describe different stages: community beginning, parish erection, construction and renewal.

Sorokdo and Hansen's disease

Sorokdo houses the Sorokdo National Hospital, an institution specialized in Hansen disease. This infectious disease is treatable; stigma and discrimination have often caused damage as deep as the disease itself.

It is preferable to talk about "people affected by Hansen's disease" and not to reduce anyone to a label. Each resident has his or her own history, links, abilities and rights.

Report of violations

The island retains buildings linked to isolation, detention, autopsies and other practices of the former system. The hospital's public website identifies these places within its historical heritage.

Remembering them requires listening to those who suffered and avoiding explanations that normalize coercion. The true memory protects the dignity of the victims and helps to prevent the reseparation of medicine from human rights.

John Paul II taught that consolation has its origin in God and compared its tenderness with that of a mother who supports her children. Mary is maternally involved in this mission within the Church.

Consolar is not to say that everything is fine or to ask for silence. It is to stay with those who suffer, listen to their truth, provide competent care and act to stop the avoidable cause of pain.

From Comforters to Comforters

Christian tradition invites those who have received comfort to become bearers of it. This requires training, prudence and respect for limits: accompanying does not amount to replacing doctors, psychologists, social workers or lawyers.

In Sorokdo, the employer's title can move to combat stigma, support rehabilitation and recognize the contribution of residents, families and professionals.

Mary by the cross

This scene inspires a closeness that does not flee the injured body. At the same time, the resurrection prevents turning pain into the last word about a life.

Health care and hope

Christian health care must unite competence, consent, confidentiality and human treatment. Prayer can support the patient, but it never replaces the appropriate diagnosis and treatment.

Hope also does not consist in promising miraculous healing. He claims that no disease eliminates a person's value and that the community should not leave it alone.

Two Catholic churches in the public guide

The official guide of the National Hospital identifies two places as Catholic churches of Sorokdo, called "1" and "2," with differentiated phones. The episcopal directory links the parish to 55 Sorokseonchang-gil.

The marker on this page corresponds to the nominal parish temple that the cartography identifies as the "h." Both buildings are not merged or undocumented functions are awarded.

Access subject to restrictions

The archdiocese warns that general access to Sorokdo may be restricted and that the operation of its retreat house is suspended when visitors are not allowed.

Before moving it is essential to consult the hospital and the parish. The privacy, safety and tranquility of the residents are above the tourist or photographic interest.

To pray with responsibility

It can be prayed for those affected by Hansen disease, for those who suffered segregation and for professionals and caregivers. Prayer must be accompanied by respectful language and active rejection of stigma.

If the visit is authorized, it should be done with discretion: not to photograph people without consent, not to invade residential areas and to follow all health and institutional standards.
