Marian devotion
In Ansan, a South Korean city open to the Yellow Sea, the Catholic community invokes the Virgin as Mary, Star of the Sea. The temple's own architecture turns that advocation into a catechesis: a moving ship and an ambon like a lighthouse remember Christ, a guiding light, and Mary, a star leading to her Son.

An officially documented dedication
The directory of the Korean Episcopal Conference expressly identifies the The Sea of the Stars, "Santa Maria, who is the Star of the Sea," as patron of this parish. It also sets the date of foundation, address, telephone and community mail.
The identity is corroborated by the parish space and by a second Catholic directory. This is not an inferred translation of the name of the temple, but an explicit Marian patronage.
The sense of "Star of the Sea"
The Christian tradition has for centuries invoked Mary as Stella Maris, Sea Star. The image speaks to those who sail among dangers: the star does not replace the port or move the boat, but offers orientation in the dark.
Mary always refers to Christ. His word in Cana - do as He says - sums up that mission. Looking at it does not turn away from the Gospel: it helps to keep the course for Jesus.
An iglesia concebida como a ship
The official chronicle of the diocese of Suwon describes the new temple as a ship. Inside, the rounded forms of the altar base evoke the waves and express unity and cooperation.
The bambon remembers a lighthouse that illuminates the sea. The interpretation offered by the source is clear: it represents the transmission of the light of the Gospel to the world. Architecture, patronage and mission are thus united.
From a provisional construction to the present temple
The parish was erected in 2001 and for years it celebrated in a provisional steel structure, insufficient against cold and heat. The hope of having a stable church was bringing together the faithful.
The work began on 14 April 2007. Before the final temple was erected, the community had to face difficult tasks, including the transfer of the structure it had used until then.
Thirty people moving the columns together
The diocesan history retains a very concrete gesture. In order to avoid the high cost of a crane, about thirty parishioners personally cut and moved the columns of the old structure, adding tubes as a nest.
The chronicle compares that coordinated movement to rowing. The image well expresses the experience of a Church that does not advance by the isolated effort of a person, but when many hands accept the same rhythm and shared responsibility.
Kimchi, grapes and small works
The faithful gathered funds through simple and persevering works. They prepared and sold kimchi, collaborated in the harvest and packaging of grapes and produced other foods in festive times.
The spiritual importance lies not in the economic value of each task, but in the accumulated surrender. The new church was also born of early cold, calls, packaging and services that might have passed unnoticed outside the community.
The first Christmas in the new church
On December 25, 2009, the first Christmas Mass was held in the new building. For the parish, contemplating the birth of Jesus within the church raised with so much effort had a special meaning.
The temple was solemnly dedicated on April 11, 2010 by Bishop Mathias Ri Iong@-@ hoon. That celebration marked the beginning of a new phase, not the end of the mission.
Mary and those who live from the sea
The title Estrella del Mar has traditionally accompanied sailors, fishermen, migrants and families waiting for the return of those who sail. Ansan is located on the western coast of Korea and maintains a real geographical relationship with the sea.
It is not attributed here to the marine apostolate parish that sources do not document. The coastal proximity, however, allows us to pray with special sensitivity for those who work in dangerous waters and for those who cross borders in search of security.
A guide on human nights
There are nights that are not weather: disease, mourning, unemployment, loneliness or family uncertainty. The star does not promise a storm-free journey; it offers a point of reference for not losing hope.
Invoking Mary in these circumstances means asking for her company and learning her fidelity. It also commits the community to become a visible sign of guidance and help for others.
The parish today
The consulted episcopal directory records 1,560 faithful and no dependent station. These data describe the community at the time of the tab and can change.
The official phone is 031-410-9191 and the mail published by the directory is mary @ casuwon.or.kr. The hours should be confirmed directly before a visit, as celebrations and parish care may vary.
verified location for the map
The official address is 158 Hanangdaehak-ro, Danwon-gu, Ansan. Nominal mapping places the parish building in 37.3091748, 126.8364905.
The marker has been placed on the temple identified by its Korean name. The generic centre of Ansan and the location of another church with a similar name have not been used.
To visit and pray
Whoever visits the temple can observe how the language of the ship, the waves and the lighthouse leads to the same question: what light guides one's own life and who is helped to find a port.
The visit can be offered by people living in the sea, by migrants, by families in crisis and by all those who work quietly to build a community.
Prayer to Mary, Star of the Sea, of Ansan
Mary, Estrella del Mar, accompanies the parish of Ansan Santa María. He always points to Jesus Christ when the darkness or the storm makes us lose course. It protects those who sail, work and migrate; it comforts their families and teach us to row together, to serve with humility and to bring the light of the Gospel to those who seek port. Amen.
