A community rooted in the time of persecution

The parish history places the arrival of the Catholic faith in the region of Anseong before and around the Byeongin persecution of 1866. Several small communities of believers lived in nearby villages and some of their members were arrested and martyred.

Anseong separated from the parish of Gongseri on October 19, 1900. Since its constitution it has received the Mother of the Good Council. The title is not a recently added label: it belongs to the formal origin of the parish.

Father Antoine Gombert and the service to Anseong

French missionary Antoine Gombert, known in Korea as Gong An@-@ guk, was the first parish priest. He came to a society that looked with suspicion at foreigners, but sought to respond to specific needs of the population.

In 1909 he founded the Anbeop school. The diocesan source explains that education was necessary for the community and that Gombert also considered it a means for Korea to regain its sovereignty and train its young people. The institution continues today as a secondary school.

The priest also promoted the cultivation of the vine by observing that the climate and soil of Anseong were adequate. This agricultural and educational dimension shows a parish that understood evangelization united with the sustenance and formation of its neighbours.

One Korean and Western church at a time

The first temple was erected in 1901. In 1922 it was rebuilt using materials from a traditional teaching room in Sinan-ri. The longitudinal part conserves wooden structure and tile cover of Korean architecture.

In 1955, the entrance was added with a half-point arch and the bell tower, which provided a Western appearance to the front. The interior space responds to a basic plant, with central ship and side corridors, determined by hanok carpentry techniques.

A real integration: It is not a Korean facade placed on a European building. The structure, reused materials and local techniques participate in the temple's own organization, while the facade and plant express their Catholic liturgical use.

Heritage that remains church

The Korean State highlights the value of the building as a rare example of hybrid religious architecture. The province of Gyeonggi protected it as a monument in 1985. Next to it there is a contemporary temple for the current needs of the community.

Heritage protection does not make the old church a mere object. The compound retains its meaning within a living parish and must be visited in respect of the prayer, the crafts and the educational activity of the environment.

The parish and the March First movement

A recent academic study examines the importance of Anseong in four areas: religion, education, social action and participation in the March 1 independence movement. The school and the Catholic community were part of a society under Japanese colonial rule.

Simplifications should be avoided: the history of missionaries, students, faithful and inhabitants does not fit into a single political position. The documentation makes it possible to state, however, that the parish generated institutions with influence beyond veneration.

What "Mother of the Good Council" means

The title addresses Mary as a woman who listens to God and leads to Jesus Christ. At the wedding of Cana he does not take the place of the Son: he perceives the need and tells the servants to do what He tells them.

John Paul II related this advocation to the gift of counsel of the Holy Spirit. To ask for Mary's intercession does not replace consciousness, prayer or responsibility; it helps to seek with prudence the true good, especially when a decision affects other people.

Pope Francis called Mary in Cana "mother of good advice." His attitude teaches a Christian community to recognize needs, to approach with discretion and to serve the action of Christ.

Council to educate and serve

In Anseong, patronage can be read in the light of the parish history itself. Founding a school, teaching, cultivating and building with earth materials were decisions that demanded discernment and cooperation.

The good Christian advice is not to impose an answer from the outside. It seeks to listen, understand the context and act in such a way that truth and charity remain united.

Anseong is an active parish and the ancient temple is protected heritage. It is appropriate to consult the hours, not to interfere with the liturgy or school life and to ask for permission to photograph people or celebrations. The visit allows for a quick look at the wood structure, the Korean cover and the transformation of the facade.

Prayer to Mary, Mother of the Good Council, of Anseong

Mary, Mother of the Good Council, accompanies the families, students and workers of Anseong. Teach us to listen before deciding, to recognize the needs of others and to do as your Son tells us. Keep the memory of those who kept faith during persecution; bless those who educate, cultivate and serve, and give us caution to build peace and the common good. Amen.
