In the centre of Wonju, the Wondong Cathedral is entrusted to Mary, Mother of Grace. The community was born in the late 19th century, lost its first great church during the Korean War, rebuilt it and ended up becoming the seat of a diocese also linked to the defense of human consciousness and dignity.

A parish founded in 1896
Wondong was born as a parish of Wonju on August 17, 1896, when he separated from Pungsuwon. His first parish priest, Louis Le Merre, acquired a traditional house and land in Sangdong-ri to establish the mission.
The Korean Catholic encyclopedia documents from the foundation the patronage of The Awakening, the Mother of God's Grace. The name Wondong was adopted in 1957, when the pastoral expansion of the city led to the creation of another parish.
The Church of 1913 and the War
In 1913 the community concluded a Gothic-style church. During the Korean War, the building was burned and destroyed. The loss was not a simple architectural replacement: it interrupted a place where several generations had celebrated the faith.
The present church was raised in 1954 on the continuity of that community. It is therefore necessary to distinguish three dates: 1896 corresponds to the parish; 1913 to the previous temple; and 1954 to the building preserved today.
A reconstruction with its own identity
The 1954 building was built by concrete blocks and artificial stone finishes. Its central tower culminates in a vaulted form that acts as an urban reference. Side access and volume conservation offer an unusual example of reconstructed Catholic architecture immediately after the war.
The National Heritage Service records a built area of 689.25 square metres. The city of Wonju highlights both its technical uniqueness and its good conservation.
De parroquia a catedral
The Holy See created the diocese of Wonju in March 1965. Wondong became his cathedral in June of that year. Since then it is the church where the bishop has its seat and a point of reference for the Catholic communities of the region.
The ecclesial repertoire recognizes it under the international title Cathedral of Our Lady of Grace and included it among the Jubilee churches of 2016 and 2025.
Monsignor Daniel Tji Hak-sun and the voice of consciousness
Daniel Tji Hak-sun, first bishop of Wonju, was arrested on 6 July 1974 on his return from abroad. He was accused of providing financial assistance to a prohibited organization. Shortly after, he issued a statement of conscience contrary to Yushin's authoritarian political order.
His detention prompted many priests to organize the Association of Catholic Priests for Justice. The archives of the Korean democratic movement place that response among the religious milestones of the defence of civil rights.
The cathedral belongs to that diocesan history, but it must not be said that every national act occurred within the building. Its meaning is to have been the seat of the local Church presided over by Bishop Tji and a place of memory of a Christian consciousness that did not want to separate faith and human dignity.
Mary, full of grace
The title "Mother of Grace" is born from Mary's unique relationship with Jesus Christ. She is the "full of grace," chosen to be Mother of the Saviour. Grace does not come from Mary as from an autonomous divinity: it is a free gift of God and it reaches its fullness in Christ.
John Paul II explained that Mary is the mother of humanity in the order of grace because she cooperated with faith, hope, charity and obedience in the work of her Son. His intercession is always dependent on Christ and leads to Him.
A necessary precision on the title
The doctrinal note Mater Populi fidilis It clarifies that "Mother of grace" can be understood correctly when it expresses that Mary helps maternally to open the heart to the Lord. Only God justifies and communicates divine life.
This distinction protects the Christian sense of advocation: to ask Mary to accompany does not replace the action of the Holy Spirit, the sacraments or personal conversion.
Grace, consciousness and reconstruction
The story of Wondong allows you to contemplate grace not as an escape of reality, but as a force to reraise, educate consciousness and serve. A community destroyed by war rebuilt its temple; a nascent diocese then faced difficult moral decisions under an authoritarian regime.

To visit
Wondong is an active cathedral and a well protected. The hours should be consulted in advance, silent during prayer and not interrupted. The tower, side accesses and reconstruction materials are best observed in a respectful way through the outside before entering.

Mary, Mother of Grace, accompanies the Church of Wonju and those who seek to rebuild their life after the war, loss or injustice. Teach us to humbly receive the gift of God, to form a true consciousness and to serve without fear the dignity of each person.
