Marian devotion
The parish of Osong, now integrated in the city of Cheongju, is dedicated to the Virgin Mary, Queen of the Angels. Its roots are found in small rural communities prior to 1907; its later history unites prayer, education, economic cooperation, farmers' accompaniment and hope for Korean reunification.

A confirmed patronage
The Episcopal Conference of Korea and the Diocese of Cheongju record Angel's BeforeQueen of the Angels, as Osong's patronage. Good News Catholic corroborates identity, address and date of foundation.
There is no local Marian apparition. The invocation expresses the glorification of Mary and her communion with the heavenly Church.
What the royalty of Mary means
Benedict XVI explained that Mary is Queen for her unique union with her Son and for her humble service. In the Annunciation it is called "the slave of the Lord."
His royalty does not rule: he loves, intercedes and leads to Jesus Christ. It is the evangelical logic according to which the one who serves occupies the greatest place.
Queen of the Angels and the Saints
The laurethane litany invokes Mary as Queen of the Angels and of all the saints. She participates in the glory of God without replacing the mediation of Christ.
St. John Paul II asked this Queen to keep faith alive, to sign hope and to burn love for God and brothers.
Roots prior to 1907
The exact date of the Gospel's arrival in Gangnae and Gangoe is not documented. The Catholic encyclopedia states that there were already faithful in Myeongwondang before 1907.
In Beolmi, believers raised a chapel in 1907. The Myeongwondang and Beolmi stations were formally documented in the 1910's.
Community of potters
Many Catholics from those communities worked by making ceramics. The trade provided support for families and, in different parts of Korea, helped believing communities to live with some mobility and cohesion.
It is not appropriate to idealize their poverty: hard work demands security, fair remuneration and recognition of dignity.
De Gamgok a Cheongju
The first stations belonged to the parish of Janghowon, today Gamgok. When the parish of Cheongju was founded in 1932, they were taken care of.
The growth of the faithful after the Korean war led to the creation of new parishes, including Osong.
Foundation on the Day of the Nativity of Mary
The diocese acquired land in May 1960 and erected the parish September 8the feast of the Nativity of the Virgin. The first priest was Father Michael Zunno.
The date unites the institutional birth of the community with the liturgical memory of Mary, even if her specific patronage is Queen of the Angels.
The temple of 1961
The church and the priestly residence were raised during the first year. A contemporary news of Catholic Times document the solemn dedication celebrated by the 13 May 1961.
Bishops, priests, religious and about a thousand faithful participated. This chronicle does not coincide with the later encyclopedia, which places another celebration on December 25; therefore both references are retained without forcing them to describe exactly the same rite.
Parish life and rural care
Pastoral Council and Conference of San Vicente de Paul were organized. Stations were also created to bring sacramental life closer to scattered communities.
The current directory records a dependent station. It is not yet created page or marker for it until it is checked for name, address, continuity and patronage.
A credit cooperative
In April 1964, thirty-eight faithful contributed capital to start a credit cooperative. The initiative sought to respond to economic needs through shared responsibility.
Faith in a servant Queen becomes concrete when it helps families avoid isolation and abuse, always with transparent management.
Free education
In February 1971 he opened the Sacred Heart kindergarten, offered free of charge. The community understood child education as a service to the territory.
Protecting children also requires safe spaces, trained personnel and respect for each family.
La gruta mariana
In August 1977 a grotto was blessed and the image of Mary was renewed. The place helped sustain community prayer.
A religious image deserves respect, but mature devotion does not attribute magic power to stone or statue: it directs the heart to God.
Aggression of farmers
In 1986 the parish promoted meetings and training on rural problems. It also participated in public debates involving farmers and neighbours.
This commitment shows that prayer does not ignore prices, water, land, debt or working conditions.
Prayer for a reunited Korea
In 1999, as the 55th anniversary of the national division approached, a fifty-five-day prayer chain began.
Reconciliation needs prayer, true memory, victim protection, freedom and responsible political decisions.
Forty years of memory
In August 2000 the parish published a story of its first forty years. Keeping files allows you to recognize both the achievements and the wounds and limits of a community.
Ecclesial memory must include women, families, farmers, catechists and volunteers, not just those who held office.
Osong in transformation
The old rural area is now known for rail, biomedical research and new infrastructure. The parish is accompanied by a territory where agricultural memories and a newly arrived population live together.
Being Queen of Angels inspires hospitality: every new neighbor must be able to find an understandable and secure community.
The current community
The official sources consulted do not match the number of faithful: the episcopal directory records 1,957 and the diocesan page 2,672. The difference probably meets different dates or criteria.
For honesty both figures are retained as data subject to update. The official phone is 043-234-0657.
verified location for the map
The official address is 11 Bear 1-gil. The cartography contrasted by Korean name and address places the temple in 36.6099907, 127.3273234.
The marker corresponds to the parish church. The railway station, the modern urban centre and the dependent mission station have not been used.
To visit and pray
One can pray for farmers and workers, one for children and educators, and another for the reconciliation of the peninsula.
It is appropriate to confirm hours in the diocese or by telephone before going. They can change.
Prayer to Mary, Queen of the Angels, from Osong
Mary, the humble slave of the Lord and Queen of Angels, accompanies the community of Osong. It keeps the memory of its potters and first stations; it blesses farmers, workers, children and educators; it strengthens honest cooperation and service to the poor. He welcomes those who come to a land in transformation and obtain truth, reconciliation and peace for all Korea. Always lead us to Jesus Christ, our only Lord. Amen.
