A community born with the industrial city

The parish was erected 26 January 1981, when Changwon grew up as a planned and industrial city. The story published by the diocese of Masan explains that he received families from different places to work and inhabit the new residential assemblies.

The community also attended to the working world of the industrial environment. Thus, faith was linked to the daily life of workers, families and neighbors who needed to build links in a young city.

The new temple of 2005

Urban reconstruction forced the temporary use of a given space. The current church was erected in the Banlim district and dedicated in December 2005, as the twenty-fifth parish anniversary approached.

This continuity shows that a parish is not only identified with a building: it is a community capable of persevering and redoing its common house.

Why Mary is Queen of the Martyrs

Mary remained next to the cross of Jesus. He did not suffer martyrdom by execution, but shared with maternal fidelity the passion of his Son and did not abandon the nascent community.

To call her Queen of the Martyrs does not separate her from Christ. He recognizes in her the first disciple who accompanies those who bear witness to him and leads them to the Paschal victory.

The martyrs of Korea

The Korean Church was born in a unique way on the initiative of laity who knew the faith through books from China. During the persecutions, men and women of different ages and conditions held that faith to death.

John Paul II recalled, in canonizing 103 Korean martyrs in 1984, that that community deepened its unity through prayer and fraternal love. His memory does not feed resentment: he calls to live the truth today with charity and freedom.

A crown made of service

Mary's royalty has the style of her Son: humility, service and dedication. That is why the invocation does not celebrate human power, but the fertility of a life that remains faithful to the Gospel.

In an environment marked by industrial work, this spirituality invites you to defend the dignity of the worker, to care for families and to accompany those who suffer from precariousness, accident or exhaustion.

Witnesses without violence

The Christian martyr does not seek death or impose his faith. He is a witness because he refuses to respond to evil with hatred and retains inner freedom even under duress.

Pope Francis presented the Korean martyrs as models of faith, charity and solidarity. Invoking them with Mary helps to ask for perseverance without fanaticism and courage without violence.

Report for reconciliation

Remembering those who suffered persecution requires protecting the freedom of conscience of all people today. The Christian memory must become hospitality and not an instrument against others.

Mary, Queen of the Martyrs, can gather prayer for the peninsula divided, for the Christian communities living in hiding and for a peace based on human dignity.
