Documented patronage
The Bishops' Conference of Korea Before and After, "Queen of the Martyrs," as official patronage. The leadership and the diocese clearly identify this community.
An updated Catholic directory and a photographic chronicle corroborate the name, address and Marian title. It is not the parish of Sinheung in another city.
Founded in the year of a historic canonization
The parish was founded 18 September 1984. That same year, on May 6, St. John Paul II canonized 103 martyrs from Korea in Seoul.
The temporary coincidence is significant, although the sources consulted do not show that it alone determines the choice of patronage. It is therefore distinguished between two documented facts and a possible unconfirmed relationship.
Mary by the cross
The Gospel of John places Mary next to the cross of Jesus. He does not flee to suffering or respond with violence; he remains, receives the disciple as a son and participates with faith in the surrender of Christ.
The Church calls her Queen of the Martyrs because she accompanies in a unique way the sacrifice of the first and supreme Witness, her Son, and sustains maternally those who bear witness to him.
The word "martyr" means witness
Christian martyrdom is not a search for death. It is fidelity to the Gospel when such fidelity requires persecution, imprisonment or violence.
The martyr does not conquer by destroying the persecutor, but by remaining united with Christ, by forgiving and trusting his life to God.
The martyrs of Korea
The Korean Church was born in a unique way by the search for faith by lay people. During different persecutions, believers of different ages and social conditions kept their Christian confession.
The 103 saints canonized in 1984 do not exhaust that memory. In 2014, another 124 witnesses were beatified, and many stories remain linked to local families and communities.
The invocation of 1984
After the canonization, John Paul II stated that the Queen of the Martyrs shared the joy of the Korean Church. He remembered Mary at the foot of the cross and asked for her comfort for the believers of the North and China.
This text offers a particularly close foundation to the patronage of Sinheung-dong: it unites Mary, the Korean martyrs, the peninsular division and the hope of persevering in the faith.
Service royalty
The royalty of Mary does not reproduce political domination. He participates in the royalty of Christ, who serves, gives up life and makes love triumph.
Invoking her as Queen means asking for her intercession and learning her humility. The true Christian authority protects the weak and seeks reconciliation.
Memory without hate
Reminder of martyrs does not authorize the cultivation of resentment against individuals, peoples or religions. His testimony demands historical truth, forgiveness and defense of freedom of conscience.
A parish under this title is called to accompany those who suffer persecution and also to build a coexistence where no one is violated by their convictions.
Cotidian witness
Not all are called to martyrdom of blood, but every Christian is called to witness. Honesty, family fidelity, care for the vulnerable and forgiveness may require a costly surrender.
Mary helps to live that testimony without exhibitionism: with serene strength, true words and works of love.
The Sisters of the Charity of Jesus
The episcopal record records the presence of the Sisters of the Charity of Jesus. The name of the congregation underlines that the Christian witness reaches its truth in charity.
No specific current tasks are attributed without direct confirmation. Their documented presence allows us to recognize the contribution of the consecrated life to the parish community.
An urban community
The directory records 2,311 faithful and no dependent station. The church is located in an urban area of Seongnam near houses, shops and communication routes.
The figures may vary, but they show a local community of considerable size, called to keep the martyrdom memory alive in the middle of ordinary life.
verified location for the map
The episcopal direction is 432 Gongwon-ro, Sujeong-gu. The nominal mapping, contrasted with name and direction, places the temple in 37.4489945, 127.143236.
The marker corresponds to the parish church of Sinheung-dong in Seongnam, not to another homonymous town or to the approximate center of the neighborhood.
To visit and pray
The parish appears active and maintains an online community, but the schedules may change. It is appropriate to confirm directly before moving.
The visit can be offered by Christians persecuted, by the reconciliation of Korea and by those who must defend the truth without responding to evil with hatred.
Prayer to Mary, Queen of the Martyrs, of Sinheung-dong
Mary, Queen of the Martyrs, guards the parish of Sinheung-dong and the city of Seongnam. It strengthens those who suffer for their faith, comforts their families and teaches us to overcome evil with good. Make us humble witnesses of Jesus Christ, servants of truth, forgiveness and reconciliation. Amen.
