In Yeosan, within the municipality of Iksan, a parish and pilgrimage place is dedicated to Mary, Queen of the Martyrs. The title is not here an abstract reference: the temple is among places where Christians were executed during the persecution of 1868.

Advocation: Mary, Queen of the Martyrs.

Official Korean name: About Us Chimyeongja- ui I can.

Temple: 여산성당 · Yeosan Catholic Church.

Address: 14 Yeosan-myeon, Iksan- si, Jeonbuk 54520, Corea del Sur.

Official Foundation: 17 January 1959.

Jurisdiction: Catholic diocese of Jeonju, sixth district.

Coordinates checked: 36.06046, 127.08526.

A documented patronage

The directory of the Korean Episcopal Conference expressly records About Us, "Queen of the Martyrs," as patron of the parish of Yeosan. Direction, foundation and diocesan dependence are confirmed by several Catholic sources.

The diocese of Jeonju also links the spirituality of the title to the places of martyrdom of the municipality. It is therefore not a connection built only by this page.

Precise identification: This file corresponds to Yeosan Catholic Church and the immediate martyrdom environment. It should not be confused with the church of "Gate of Heaven" or other sanctuaries of martyrs of the diocese of Jeonju.

What "martyr" means

The word martyr means "witness." In Christian tradition he appoints those who remain faithful to Christ until they accept death, without responding to hatred with hatred.

martyrdom is not a search for violence, contempt for life, or aggression against other people. The Church honors a faithfulness suffered, not fanaticism or deliberately provoked death.

Why Mary is Queen of the Martyrs

Mary did not die executed, but remained at the foot of the cross when her Son was condemned and abandoned. His compassion unites him in a unique way to the sacrifice of Christ.

Benedict XVI recalled that the Christian witness overcomes through truth and charity. Invoking Mary as Queen of the Martyrs asks to learn that unarmed force, capable of resisting evil without reproducing it.

The persecution of 1868 in Yeosan

The official cultural information of Jeonbuk identifies Yeosan as the site of the persecution of 1868, within the period started with the repressive measures of 1866. Christians detained in different areas were taken there to be executed.

The public source points to 22 registered martyrs. The documented number does not allow for the calculation of how many victims could be left without a name, so the fact sheet avoids unverifiable estimates.

Several places within the same territory

The memory is not concentrated at a single point. The sources mention Supjeongi, the market, the old administrative site and the place called Baekjisa, as well as other nearby spaces.

In some, beheading and hanging were performed. In Baekjisa, a method of asphyxiation was used by wet paper leaves applied to the face. These data are presented with sobriety to remember the victims, not to turn suffering into a show.

A parish founded in 1959

The present parish was founded 17 January 1959 and comes from the Nabawi community. Its institutional erection occurred decades after the persecution.

This temporary distance helps to distinguish two connected stories: the martyrdom events of the 19th century and the stable parish organization of the 20th century.

Withdrawal on the land of martyrs

The diocese documents monthly retreats in Yeosan with the participation of pilgrims from different regions. The days include celebration, prayer and formation on the spirituality of martyrdom and devotion to Mary Queen of the Martyrs.

The Christian pilgrimage does not end in historical admiration. It invites us to examine our own daily fidelity, the ability to forgive and the commitment to those who are being persecuted today.

The Year of the 150th Anniversary

Between the Advent of 2017 and 2018, the parish lived a year of pilgrimage on the occasion of the 150th anniversary of the persecution of 1868. Yeosan was also recognized as a pilgrimage place during the Korean laity Jubilee.

The commemoration brought together prayer, historical memory and awareness of the responsibility of the laity in the transmission of faith.

The pavilion of anonymous martyrs

The parish rehabilitated an abandoned building that had belonged to a Protestant community and made it a space dedicated to the unnamed martyrs. The diocese presented the work as a material and memorial recovery.

Remembering anonymous people corrects a story that focuses only on known figures. Every victim has a dignity that does not depend on his name having reached us.

Memory without enmity

To preserve the history of persecution does not mean to feed hostility against the descendants of those who then ruled or against those who profess another faith.

The Christian memory seeks truth, justice and reconciliation. Hiding violence would be irresponsible; making it an instrument of hatred would betray the testimony of those who forgave.

The current community

The consulted episcopal directory records 594 faithful, four dependent stations, a priest and the presence of the Sisters of the Sacred Heart of Mary of Mirinae. This data may vary.

The official phone is 063-838-8761. Anyone who wishes to travel must first confirm hours, access to the spaces and activities of the place.

verified location for the map

The official address is 14 Yeongjeon-gil, Yeosan-myeon, Iksan. Open mapping identifies the Catholic building in 36.06046, 127.08526.

The score corresponds to Yeosan Catholic Church. The other places of execution form a nearby itinerary, but have not been accumulated as different markers within this parish record.

To visit and pray

The visit can be offered by those suffering religious persecution, by the nameless victims and by societies that need to face historical wounds with truth and reconciliation.

It is necessary to walk the place in silence, avoid disrespectful photographs and listen to history before making conclusions. Prayer can culminate in a concrete commitment to religious freedom and human dignity.

Prayer to Mary, Queen of the Martyrs, from Yeosan

Mary, Queen of the Martyrs, keeps the parish and the memory places of Yeosan. He receives those who testified to Christ and the victims whose names were lost. Hold those who are persecuted today, deliver us from fanaticism and revenge, and teach us to respond to hatred with the unarmed force of truth, forgiveness and charity. Lead us to Jesus, faithful witness. Amen.
