A confirmed advocation
The Bishops' Conference of Korea About Us, Queen of Peace, as patronage of Yonghyeon- dong. The parish chronology documents that the community adopted it on 16 March 1996.
There is no local Marian apparition or a miraculous image. This fact sheet contains a parish apvocation and its community history.
Mary and the title of Queen
The Church calls Mary Queen for her union with Jesus Christ, not because she has independent power. His royalty participates in the service and victory of his Son.
Marian devotion leads to Christ. It does not attribute to Mary divinity or replace prayer to the Father, Scripture or sacraments.
Queen of Peace
The title presents Mary as an intercessor and model for those who receive and work for the peace of Christ. Paul VI asked to come to it through the Rosary in times of war.
Christian peace is neither passivity nor mere absence of conflict. It demands truth, justice, responsible forgiveness and protection of victims.
Peace does not cover the damage
Reconciliation does not mean forcing people to live with those who continue to attack. When there is violence, the priority is to stop, protect and use professional and legal assistance.
A community dedicated to the Queen of Peace must hear complaints, be accountable and prevent abuse of vulnerable children and adults.
A special intention for Korea
In his Mass for Peace and Reconciliation in Seoul, Pope Francis recalled that unity is a gift of God and requires forgiveness while recognizing injustice.
Yonghyeon can pray for separate families, religious freedom, encounter between North and South and a peace that respects the dignity of everyone.
Birth from Uijeongbu 2-dong
The parish was erected 23 February 1996, separating from Uijeongbu 2-dong, today the cathedral of the diocese. It started with 504 households and about 1,200 faithful.
The first parish priest was John Bosco Kim Sang- young. The community received its own structure before having a final church.
Residential and Camp Indian
In the first months, the faithful celebrated in residential complex premises and in the former American military camp known as Camp Indian.
The chronology records a first mass in the provisional church of the camp on June 16, 1996. The data is kept without idealizing the military context.
A land expected for years
The parish presentation explains that the site had been prepared almost eight years before the end of the church. The waiting shows that community life preceded the building.
On 22 December 1996, the construction committee was formed, with specific responsibility for the project.
The 1997 works
Land clearance and movement began in March 1997. On March 9, the works of the church and the parish house were uprooted.
On March 29, the community celebrated the Pascual Vigil in the open air on the ground, uniting the hope of the Resurrection with the work still incomplete.
First Mass and dedication
The parish moved to the compound at the end of June. The altar was installed on September 19 and the first mass in the temple was held 5 October 1997.
Cardinal Stephen Kim Sou@-@ hwan presided over the dedication 16 November. The dates distinguish occupation, first celebration and solemn consecration.
A parish that gave rise to others
Territorial growth led to the preparation of new communities. Cheonghak separated in 2002, and later sources also cite the parishes of Song- san, Milla- k and Gosan.
Each needs its own research before receiving Marian marker or attribution. Having been born of Yonghyeon does not mean sharing his patronage.
Biblical formation
The parish promoted long paths of Bible study and activities for groups of different ages. In 2022 he also began biblical formation for the entire community.
The knowledge of Scripture protects Marian devotion from exaggeration and helps to understand peace as the fruit of justice and the Spirit.
Social service
In 2006, on the occasion of the tenth anniversary, a parish social welfare entity was established. The community also has a school of elders recognized by the municipality.
Peace becomes concrete when it accompanies loneliness, fragility, poverty and ageing without discrimination by religion.
A region that continues to grow
Yonghyeon attends an area of Uijeongbu linked to Yonghyeon, Song-san, Milla-k and Gosan. Urban expansion has been changing boundaries and creating new parishes.
The historical pages contain forecasts prior to some already realized separations. The historical data are therefore distinguished from the current episcopal record.
The current community
The consulted episcopal directory records 3,718 faithful, two priests and no dependent station. The official phone is 031-851-9190.
