The Nativity of Mary of Yangon-dong - From a small season to seven new parishes

Marian devotion

← Volver to Korea del Sur

In Yangon-dong, within southern Seoul, a parish is dedicated to the Nativity of the Virgin Mary. His history began modestly in 1912 and, with the growth of the city, he helped to give rise to seven new parish communities.

Advocation: Nativity of the Virgin Mary.

Official Korean name: 성 Symmap.

Temple: 양재동성당 · Yangjaedong Catholic Church.

Address: 14 Gangnam@@

Origin as a missionary station: 1912.

Official parish foundation: July 15, 1965.

Jurisdiction: Catholic archdiocese of Seoul, 11th district of Gangnam.

Coordinates checked: 37.4866667, 127.0344444.

The confirmed patronage

The Bishops' Conference of Korea Mature, "Nativity of Mary," as patronage of Yangon-dong. The parish website also retains the historical dedication of the temple in the same form.

Two other Catholic directories corroborate name, date, address and patronage. The document corresponds to a specific community and does not duplicate other Korean parishes dedicated to the same party.

Geographical accuracy: Although it retains the name Yangjae-dong, the current postal address is in Dogok-dong, Gangnam district. It should not be confused with other churches near the Yangjae station.

A feast oriented towards Christ

The Gospels do not narrate the birth of Mary. The liturgy is not intended to complete that silence with an imagined biography, but to thank the beginning of the life of who would be the mother of Jesus Christ.

St. John Paul II explained that this feast shows how the divine plan also goes through the humble beginnings. The joy for Mary always leads to the incarnation and saving work of her Son.

The aurora before the light

The Christian tradition compares Mary's birth with the aurora that precedes the sun. The image maintains an essential distinction: Christ is the light of the world; Mary announces its closeness.

The aurora does not create the sun or take its place. It offers guidance to those who still walk in the dark and holds hope before the horizon is fully illuminated.

The value of a life that begins

Celebrating a birth recalls that every person has dignity before demonstrating abilities, productivity or prestige. Mary was first a child who needed care, time and a community to grow up in.

This advocacy calls for the protection of children, for the support of families and for the construction of safe environments where no child is exposed to neglect or violence.

A missionary station around 1912

The parish history places its beginnings in 1912, when there was the Gaeri station, also identified as Yangon-ri. That small presence preceded in more than half a century the formal erection of the parish.

The local source uses an approximate dating for the origin. This page retains that "by 1912" and does not artificially make it an exact day.

The construction of a church

In January 1964 a movement began to raise the church from the Yangjae-ri station. The community was officially erected as a parish in July 1965, with Father Peter Lee Yong@-@ seon as the first parish priest.

In September of that year, the dedication was celebrated under the chairmanship of Archbishop Paul Roh Ki-nam, and the Nativity of Mary was set as patronage.

A new church consecrated in 1977

The parish chronology records a new consecration of the temple in October 1977, presided over by Bishop Peter Kyong Kap-ryong. In that process the bell tower was also raised.

Buildings change because communities grow and their needs change. The deepest continuity remains in the celebrated and transmitted faith.

Seven parishes born from its territory

Desde 1971, district zonas se separaron progressimente para forr parroquias propias: Sadang@@

This territorial fertility offers a special resonance with the feast of birth. The mother community did not retain everything for itself; it allowed other Christian presences to begin and mature.

The first priest from the parish

In January 1990, local history recorded the ordination of Joseph Yun Gi@-@ ho as the first priest born in the community. It is a data of parish memory, not a measure to compare vocations.

Each call has a different form. Next to the ordained ministry are the family, consecrated and secular vocations that support the daily life of the Church.

The fiftieth anniversary of 2015

The parish celebrated its fifty years in 2015 with a mass presided over by Cardinal Andrew Yeom Soo- jung, the participation of former pastors and various initiatives.

The chronology mentions a photographic exhibition, a concert, a holy hour, renovation works and activities to raise funds. Memory combined prayer, culture and care of common space.

A community in the urban heart of Seoul

The current environment of Yangon and Dogok is marked by large roads, metropolitan transport, offices and residential districts. It is very different from the landscape surrounding the missionary station of the early 20th century.

Urban change does not eliminate memory. The parish can recognize its roots and, at the same time, welcome those who reach a continuously renewed area.

The current community

The consulted episcopal directory records 5,569 faithful, two priests and the presence of the Missionary Benedictine Sisters of Tutzing of Daegu. This data may vary.

The official phone is 02-3462-9981. The parish publishes schedules and notices on its website, but it is appropriate to confirm them before a visit.

verified location for the map

The official address is 14 Gangnam@@. Nominal mapping places the temple in 37.4866667, 127.0344444.

The marker has been placed on Yangjaedong Catholic Church and not on the center of the neighborhood, the metro station or another nearby religious building.

To visit and pray

The visit can be offered by children, families starting a new stage and small communities that do not yet see the fruit of their efforts.

The history of Yangon-dong invites not to despise the modest beginnings. A missionary station can become, with patience, home and origin of many other communities.

Prayer to the Virgin of the Nativity of Yangon-dong

St. Mary, whose birth announced the closeness of Jesus Christ, keeps the parish of Yangon-dong. He blesses the children and their families, holds the works that begin humbly and preserves the memory of those who sowed the faith in this place. Let every community know how to share their gifts and help to be born new presences of service, prayer and hope. Amen.
