An expressly documented patronage

The Episcopal Conference of Korea records the Nativity of Mary as the patronage of Seongbuk-dong. The official file also confirms the English name of the temple, its direction, jurisdiction and founding date.

The title has not been inferred from an image. It is found in the official field of patronage and coincides significantly with the date on which the parish was erected.

Distinction: Seongbuk-dong is a parish dedicated to a Marian party, not a place of apparitions. It is different from Banghak-dong, Beon-dong, Daechi and other Korean communities that share the Nativity of Mary.

A community born on 8 September

The parish began 8 September 1975. The coincidence with the patron party allows you to see your history as a vocation to be born, grow and offer hope in your neighborhood.

The episcopal source does not provide an extensive chronicle of its early years. Out of respect for the truth, no founders, previous temples or events are attributed that are not documented.

The feast of the Nativity of Mary

The Church celebrates the birth of Mary the September 8, nine months after the Immaculate Conception. The Gospels do not narrate the specific circumstances of their birth.

The liturgy does not seek to satisfy biographical curiosity. It welcomes the beginning of a life called to freely welcome Jesus Christ and to serve the saving plan of God.

Aurora of Redemption

St. John Paul II presented Mary the girl as the aurora of Redemption. The aurora is not yet the full day, but it announces its arrival and allows to wait for the light.

Mary is not the source of salvation: she announces and receives Christ. Every healthy devotion retains this Christological center and leads to the Gospel.

The dignity of each beginning

Celebrating a birth recalls that a person's value precedes his merits, abilities and achievements. Each child deserves shelter, protection and safe conditions for development.

The spirituality of the parish becomes concrete when it protects minors, accompanies difficult pregnancies, supports families and seriously listens to any signs of abuse.

God works in the small

Pope Francis explained, in a homily of this feast, that God does his work of reconciliation in small things and on the daily path.

Seongbuk-dong can live that style through discrete and perseverant services: visiting those who are alone, teaching patiently, sharing food and rebuilding damaged links.

Start over

The birth of Mary offers an image of hope to those who go through a loss, a failure or a break. Restart does not erase the past or avoid duel, but allows opening up to a different future.

The Christian community must accompany these processes without haste, without blaming the suffering and without promising extraordinary solutions.

Transmitir la fe

Mary heard, kept and meditated on the Word. His birth invites him to thank the faith received and to transmit it through a coherent life, not only through formulas.

Catechesis needs to listen to the questions of children and young people, respect their freedom and show that Christian faith can illuminate friendship, study, work and service.

Prayer for children and Korea

St. John Paul II joined the feast to the prayer for children, peace and reconciliation. These intentions have a particular resonance on a peninsula still divided.

From Seongbuk-dong you can pray for children affected by poverty, displacement or family separation, and for political decisions that always protect life and human dignity.

verified location for the map

The episcopal directory places the temple in 28 Seonjam-ro. The nominal mapping of the parish area in 37.5953927, 126.9979112.

The marker corresponds to the Catholic church of Seongbuk-dong, in Seongbuk-gu, and not to another Korean temple or neighborhood of similar name.

To visit and pray

It's an active parish. The hours and those responsible may change, so it is necessary to check them before they come and respect the ordinary cult of the community.

The first joyful mystery can be prayed for every life that begins, one ten for those who must reclaim and another for the reconciliation of Korea.

Prayer to the Virgin of the Nativity of Seongbuk-dong

Virgin Mary, aurora of salvation, keeps the parish of Seongbuk-dong, born on the day of your Nativity. It protects every child, strengthens families and accompanies those who need to start over. Teach us to discover the work of God in the small and to serve with patience. Intercede for the reconciliation and peace of all Korea and always bring us Jesus Christ, your Son. Amen.
