In Yangon, within the municipality of Gimpo, a Catholic parish includes Our Lady of the Annunciation. Its own date of foundation, on March 25, coincides with the solemnity in which the Church recalls the angel's announcement and Mary's free response.

An expressly registered patronage

The joint feast of Christ and Mary

St. Paul VI explained that the solemnity regained the name "Annunciation of the Lord," for its center is the Incarnation of the Son of God. At the same time, it remains a deeply Marian celebration.

In it is the Word that takes on our humanity and Mary who, through the work of the Holy Spirit, receives it with free and generous consent. Christ is the proclaimed Savior; Mary is the believer Virgin who welcomes her coming.

"Rejoice, full of grace"

Gabriel's greeting does not begin with a threat, but with a call to joy. God enters a simple house in Nazareth and entrusts a decisive mission to a young woman who listens.

Grace precedes the answer. Mary does not make mystery alone, nor does she conquer divine favor: she receives God's gift and allows her entire existence to be transformed.

A question born of discernment

Mary asks how the announced will happen. His question is not rejection, but discernment before a word that exceeds his possibilities.

The Christian faith does not require that intelligence be turned off. Listen, ask and look for how to respond are part of a mature obedience.

The "yes" that leaves room for God

Mary's answer - "Be done in me according to your word" - does not express passivity. Accepts a mission that will compromise your body, your reputation, your relationships and your whole life.

Pope Francis has described Mary as someone who abandons, obeys and makes space. Their availability is born of trust and fully retains their human dignity.

Founded on March 25

The parish of Yangon was officially founded 25 March 1987. The agreement with the solemnity of the Annunciation exceptionally harmonizes the founding date and the patronage.

The sources consulted do not explain the specific process by which the title was chosen. For this reason, no intention is stated that is not documented; the liturgical coincidence and its spiritual strength for the community are noted.

A community between urban and rural changes

Yangchon-eup belongs to the municipality of Gimpo, north-west of Seoul and near the estuary of the Han River. The area has undergone major changes due to residential, industrial and road growth.

This geographical context helps to place the parish, but does not allow to attribute specific pastoral activities without documentation. It does invite a community that accompanies old and new families within a changing territory.

The Annunciation in Daily Life

Divine action does not eliminate Mary's freedom. The announcement expects a response and that response has real value.

That is why this invocation requires that all forms of coercion be rejected in the name of religion. Christian obedience can never justify abuse, violence or silencing of consciousness.

After the Annunciation, Mary is on her way to visit Isabel. The Word received leads to service and the joy received becomes company.

A parish dedicated to this mystery is called to unite prayer and availability: to listen before acting, and to act so that other people find hope.
