Marian devotion

In Gwonseondong, within the South Korean city of Suwon, a large community venates the Virgin Mary in the mystery of her Asunción to heaven. A parish born in an expanding city
The preparation of the new community began in 1986 with the acquisition of land. In May 1987, provisional structures were set up for the church, the priestly house and the offices. On 27 August of that year Gwonseondong was officially erected as a parish, separated from the communities of Maegyo- dong and Ji- dong.
The diocese identifies the Mary raised to heaven and sets his own memory on August 15. A diocesan news from 2018 confirms the same patronage and describes a community that then surrounded the nine thousand faithful.
From the first building to the present temple
The initial installation was soon small. In 1990, it was expanded, but community growth and floods affecting the site showed that a permanent solution was needed. In 1991 a new site was acquired and the following year construction began.
In 1994, the minor church, the priestly residence and the convent could be used. The current set was completed during the following years and on 24 October 1998 Bishop Paul Choi Duk-ki presided over the solemn dedication of the new temple.
A Korean interpretation of the Gothic
The building reinterprets the Gothic architecture through the brick and a high tower that reaches approximately 55 meters. Verticality does not seek a mere monumental impression: it looks to God and prepares a space collected for Eucharistic celebration and prayer.
The project included rest units, funeral spaces and accessibility measures. Thus, architectural beauty was linked to the concrete attention of those who come to the parish.
The mysteries of the Rosary in the windows
The religious and artist Kim Gyeom- sun, of Our Lady's Sisters, conceived the windows to accompany prayer. On one side are the joyful mysteries; on the other, the painful ones; behind the altar are the glorious ones.
The Resurrection, the Ascension of the Lord, Pentecost, the Assumption of Mary and her coronation as Queen form a visual catechesis. When light passes through the glass, the temple invites the life, death and glory of Jesus Christ to travel with Mary.
The Assumption at the center of the artistic program
The patron of the parish is integrated into the fourth glorious mystery. It is not an isolated scene of the Gospel: the Assumption is seen after the victory of Christ and the coming of the Holy Spirit, and before the coronation of Mary.
This sequence protects the Christological sense of advocation. All the glory of the Virgin comes from God and manifests the destiny to which Christ calls his Church.
The altar, the Word and the new Jerusalem
The same artist performed the mural of the presbyterium and other liturgical elements. They include Christ, the Lamb, the Scripture, the twelve apostles, the angels and the holy city. The temple does not present Mary separated from the mystery of her Son, but within the communion of the saints and the hope of the new Jerusalem.
Marian devotion thus finds its own place with the Eucharist and the Word. Mary leads to Jesus and teaches to listen to him, keep his word and remain faithful.
What the Church confesses in the Assumption
The Church confesses that, after her earthly life, the Immaculate Mother of God was raised in body and soul to heavenly glory. This truth was solemnly defined by Pius XII in 1950, but it plunges its roots into the ancient faith and liturgy of the Church.
The formula does not determine what the definition did not want to resolve, as the concrete way of the end of Mary's earthly life. Its center is the action of God, who fully glorifies the Mother of his Son.
A sign of hope for the body and history
John Paul II explained that the Assumption anticipates in Mary the promised resurrection to other Christians. Therefore, solemnity does not call to despise the body or the present world: it states that the whole person is called to the life of God.
Benedict XVI recalled that Mary, fully united to God, remains close to every human being. The glory does not drive her away from those who suffer; it makes her a sign of comfort and sure hope.
Pastoral center of the vicariat primer
The scope and accessibility of the site have allowed diocesan meetings, acts of movements and other calls to be held. From the territorial organization of 2006 it served as the central church of the Vicariate of Suwon and, following the reform of 2018, it maintains this mission for the first Vicariate.
This function does not make it a cathedral: it belongs to the diocese of Suwon and provides a territorial pastoral service. The tab maintains that distinction so that it does not attribute a canonical range that sources do not grant it.
Verified location
The directory of the diocese points to the official direction in 830 Gwonseon-ro. GCatholic records the territorial code 8Q99723Q+8Rthe centre is 37.2533125, 127.0395625. The mapping of the building finishes the entrance and volume of the temple a 37.2531983, 127.0394296, coordinate used on the map.
The two locations differ only a few tens of meters and clearly place the same parish area.
To visit and pray
Gwonseondong is an active parish, not a disconnected monument of its community. The parish site should be consulted to know the current times and always respect the celebrations, funerals and privacy of the faithful.
The contemplation of the windows can follow the order of the Rosary: joy, pain and glory. On August 15, the Solemnity of the Assumption, is the titular feast of the community.
Prayer to Our Lady of the Assumption of Gwonseondong
Holy Mary, raised by God to the glory of heaven, accompanies the community of Gwonseondong. Teach us to walk with faith the mysteries of the Rosary, to remain with Christ in joy and pain, and to wait for the promised resurrection. May the light that passes through these windows illuminate our life, support those who suffer and lead us to Jesus, the blessed fruit of your womb. Amen.
