The confirmed patronage
The Bishops' Conference of Korea Skills, the Assumption of Mary, as patronage of Yeongcheon. Good News Catholic confirms the same dedication, the founding date and the current direction.
A local Marian apparition is not documented. This page records a parish dedication and the history of the community that lives it.
The Hope of the Assumption
The Solemnity of August 15 announces that salvation reaches the whole person. Mary fully participates in the resurrection of her Son and anticipates the promised hope for the Church.
Pope Francis has presented the Assumption as a call to serve God and brothers with all their lives, knowing that what was done with love is not lost.
A faith lived before the parish
The Korean Catholic Encyclopedia places the Wondang station before 1885 and then the Seokchon station. In 1888 several Seokchon faithful were imprisoned in Daegu, but they kept their Christian life.
The memory of these communities avoids reducing Yeongcheon's history to a building. Before the parish structure there were families, prayer houses and believers who held the faith in adverse circumstances.
The root of Yongpyeong
In the 1870s, a Christian village with descendants of people displaced by persecution was formed in Yongpyeong- dong. In 1893 the house of Kim Tae- ho Francis hosted a missionary station.
Yongpyeong was raised to parish in 1907. His church, completed in 1912, also hosted a school where catechesis and Chinese characters were taught.
Yeongcheon's birth in 1936
Yongpyeong's distance from the center led to the preparation of a community in Yeongcheon- eup. In 1935 an old inn was bought in Gwajeon-dong and a station was organized there.
The parish of Yeongcheon was erected 1 January 1936. His first parish priest, Raymond Froidevaux, used that station provisionally and obtained help from family members in Switzerland to build a church, completed in October of the same year.
Faith under occupation and war
The community went through religious restrictions at the end of the Japanese occupation and the difficulties of the Korean war. The parish history documents pastoral continuity without concealing those periods of suffering.
The Assumption directs the look to the definitive life without taking it away from the historical pain: it invites the protection of human dignity precisely when it is threatened.
Education and social closeness
In 1951, he opened the Saetbyeol kindergarten. The relationship with the local population helped to overcome the perception of Catholicism as a foreign religion and encouraged community growth.
In 1962, a vocational school for young people with difficulties, held by voluntary teachers until 1968, began. The story linked to Yongpyeong also recalls orphanage, residence for the elderly, free care, dining room and help the sick.
A network for rural areas
To accompany the far-off faithful, the creation of missionary stations in different municipalities was promoted. The current directory records four dependent communities.
Each station must be investigated separately before receiving its own data sheet and marker: current name, address, continuity and possible patronage should not be assumed.
Lateral growth and participation
The parish expanded its church in 1957. In later decades he promoted formation, pastoral council, community newsletter, age groups and Eucharistic worship.
These initiatives show a community that moved responsibilities from an exclusively clerical organization to wider participation of the faithful.
Ninety years and a new temple
The archdiocese of Daegu reports on the dedication of a new temple 1 January 2026, exactly on the nineties of the parish foundation. The celebration was presided over by Archbishop Thaddeus Cho Hwan-kil.
The official news is after the historical encyclopedia, which describes an ancient headquarters in Seongnae-dong. The current address of the episcopal directory in Wansana-dong is used for the map.
The current community
The consulted episcopal record counts 3,015 faithful, two priests, four missionary stations and the presence of the Sisters of Saint Paul of Chartres.
These are administrative data subject to update. The published parish phone is 054-338-3381; the hours must be confirmed directly before travelling.
Mary and the dignity of the body
Benedict XVI taught that the Assumption reveals the value of the whole person. The body is not a disposable object: it is called, by the soul, to participate in the life of God.
This faith requires caring for the sick, the elderly, persons with disabilities and workers at risk, as well as rejecting violence, exploitation and neglect.
Hope that becomes service
The glory of Mary does not invite you to flee the world. His Magnificat sings God's mercy and his preference for the humble.
In Yeongcheon, the history of schools and social works offers a concrete translation: education, feeding, healing, accompanying and creating opportunities.
Memory of those who held the faith
The document reminds missionaries and priests, but also anonymous families, catechists, voluntary teachers and rural inhabitants who kept the communities alive.
Celebrating the Assumption allows us to thank those who died in hope and to recognize the legacy they left to later generations.
For peace on the Korean peninsula
A community born of displacement and persecution can pray with special sensitivity for separated families, for religious freedom and for a peace based on truth.
Eschatological hope does not replace political and social responsibility: it strengthens the commitment to reconciliation, justice and protection of life.
verified location for the map

To visit and pray
One can pray for those who passed on the faith during the persecutions, one for educators and volunteers, and another for the elderly and rural communities.
In the Solemnity of August 15, the community can renew its hope for the resurrection and translate it into concrete care of the whole person.
Prayer to Our Lady of the Assumption of Yeongcheon
Mary, raised in body and soul to the glory of God, accompanies the community of Yeongcheon. Keep the memory of those who kept the faith in times of persecution and war; bless those who educate, heal and serve; support the elderly and rural communities. Teach us to wait for the resurrection without turning away from the present suffering, and to work for the dignity, reconciliation and peace of all Korea. Amen.
