Our Lady of the Assumption of Yonggang - A factory turned into a house of prayer in Gyeongju

In Yonggang, north of the historic city of Gyeongju, an old industrial facility was transformed into a church. The community put its life under the patronage of the Assumption of Mary and prepared the temple's dedication to the Rosary and the copy of Holy Scripture.

A confirmed advocation

The Bishops' Conference of Korea Skills, the Assumption of Mary, as patronage of Yonggang. Good News Catholic corroborates the title, the erection date and the current home.

A local Marian apparition and a miraculous image are not documented. This fact sheet contains a parochial dedication and the proven history of the community that lives it.

The Hope of the Assumption

The Assumption announces that the salvation of Christ reaches the whole person. In Mary glorified, the Church previews the resurrection and destiny to which the redeemed are called.

Pius XII solemnly defined this dogma in 1950. Munificentissimus Deus, after a much older liturgical and doctrinal tradition.

The body is not disposable

Benedict XVI taught that the Assumption helps to understand the dignity of the human body. The person is not meant to be used, exploited or abandoned, but to full communion with God.

This faith commits to caring for the sick, the elderly, workers, persons with disabilities and victims of violence. Waiting for Heaven does not allow us to get rid of the earth.

A young parish

Yong fue ergiida el August 26, 2011 to accompany a growing area of Gyeongju pastoral. The directory is integrated into the archdiocese of Daegu, within the fourth vicariate.

The parish was born before its final liturgical space was prepared. For two years, the community was giving material and spiritual form to its new home.

Industrial installation to church

The official homily of the dedication explains that the land had been industrial and maintained a business building. Instead of demolishing it and lifting another from scratch, the existing construction was remodeled to make it a temple.

His external aspect still recalled, according to the Archbishop, his previous role. The consecration gave the place a new purpose: the proclamation of the Word, the celebration of the Eucharist, reconciliation and prayer.

A transformation with human value

Reusing an existing structure can also be read as a sign of hope: human work and the history of a building do not have to be ruled out when it changes its function.

Material transformation does not automatically convert a community. The church becomes alive when its members welcome God and serve their neighbours.

The 2013 dedication

Archbishop Thaddeus Cho Hwan-kil presided over the dedication 15 September 2013 at 10: 30. The archdiocese published both the chronicle of the celebration and the full homily.

The date of dedication should not be confused with the solemnity of the Assumption, held universally on August 15, or with the parish erection of 2011.

Eighty-seventy thousand tens of the Rosary

Before the dedication, the faithful proposed to offer a million tens of the Rosary and reached 870.000. The Archbishop himself stressed that this amount already represented a great gift of prayer.

Spiritual value does not depend on fulfilling a competitive figure. The Rosary helps to contemplate Christ with Mary; it must never become pressure, prestige accounting or measure to judge the faith of others.

The Scripture copied by hand

The community accompanied the Rosary with a copy of the Bible initiative. The gesture requires time, attention and perseverance, and can help to hear words that a hasty reading would let pass.

Copying is not enough if the Word does not reach decisions. The dedication invited to receive in the temple the strength to live in accordance with the Gospel throughout the week.

The church as the house of God

The homily explained that dedicating the temple was not just offering walls, but also heart, intent, work and prayer. The building serves the presence of a community gathered before God.

The Archbishop recalled that he proclaims the Word and celebrates the Eucharist. He also asked that it be a place where those who have gone away can return and find the Father's merciful welcome.

Mary, model of faith

In that celebration Mary was identified as the patron of Yonggang, the mother of believers and model of faith. His Assumption does not drive her away from the community: it shows the full fruit of a life received and given to God.

To ask for his intercession means to learn his listening, his availability and his fidelity to Christ, not to attribute an independent divinity to him.

Gyeongju, city of memory

Gyeongju retains an exceptional heritage of the old kingdom of Silla. The Catholic parish lives within that historical and religious landscape, not outside it.

Their presence should promote the respectful knowledge of the Buddhist and cultural heritage of the city. Evangelize never allows to despise the convictions, temples or memory of others.

Neighbor service

In 2020, the local government documented Yonggang's cooperation with other religious centres to locate people and families outside the social assistance network.

Interreligious collaboration for those who suffer expresses a concrete closeness. It must be done with respect for privacy and avoiding using the need as a means of recruitment.

The current community

The consulted episcopal directory records 912 faithful and a dependent community. It also delimits pastoral care between sectors of Yonggang-dong, Hwangseong-dong and Cheonbuk-myeon.

The dependent community

The Episcopal Conference indicates that Yonggang attends a missionary station, but the summary does not provide its name, address or patronage.

A separate marker is not created without reliable identification. It shall be investigated as its own entity before it is attributed to it by an advocation or mapping position.

The marker corresponds to the current church. The centre of the neighborhood, a generic street point and the dependent community are not yet identified.

To visit and pray

Yonggang is an active parish. Before you go it is prudent to call to confirm schedules, respect the celebrations and avoid photographing people without permission.

The fourth glorious mystery can be prayed, contemplating the Assumption, and asking for the workers of Gyeongju, for those who seek a new purpose after a loss and for people who do not reach social services.
