Marian devotion
The parish of Yulgok was born in the new innovation city of Gimcheon and began celebrating under a store. Her patron is the Virgin Mary in the mystery of the Assumptionhope that the victory of Christ will reach the whole person.

An officially confirmed advocation
The Bishops' Conference of Korea Skills, the Assumption of Mary, as patronage of Yulgok. The newsletter of the Archdiocese of Daegu confirms the same title and adds its foundational history.
This is not an attribution based on the name of a statue. It is the official dedication of the parish community.
What the Assumption confesses
The Church teaches that Mary, who finished the course of her earthly life, was brought in body and soul to the glory of heaven. This grace comes entirely from the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ.
Mary is not a parallel divinity. His glorification anticipates the promised resurrection to those who belong to Christ and shows the destiny to which God calls the whole person.
The dignity of the body
The Assumption states that the human body is not a disposable object. It deserves respect for health, disability, work, old age, disease and death.
This hope requires caring for those who depend on others, accompanying the duel and rejecting any form of exploitation that reduces a person's value to his or her strength or productivity.
Born of Jijwa in a new city
Yulgok was erected on 21 January 2015, separated from the parish of Jijwa. Its territory includes Yulgok-dong and areas of Nongso-myeon and Nam-myeon.
The creation responded to the development of the city of innovation in Gimcheon, where public institutions were established and new families arrived. A planned area also needed human ties and a community of faith nearby.
The first mass under a store
The diocesan newsletter has a humble beginning: the first parish priest, Father Matthew Hwang Young-sam, celebrated Mass under a store.
The image should not idealize precariousness. It shows that the community existed before its building and that the celebration, organization and mutual help were preparing a stable home.
A small community with a future
A 2015 chronicle recorded 281 faithful distributed in 115 families. At the same time, he noted the expected arrival of 12 public bodies in the city of innovation.
These figures describe the initial moment, not the current population. They allow us to understand the scale from which Yulgok began and the expectation of growth that accompanied his foundation.
The primera iglesia de 2015
On October 4, 2015, a dedication was held in Yulgok-dong, chaired by the episcopal vicar of the fifth vicar. That church provided the community with a first stable space a few months after its erection.
The news uses the term "new church," but the later diocesan history documents another dedication in 2021. This is why this fact sheet understands both data as successive stages, without deleting the first.
The present temple, dedicated in 2021
The Daegu newsletter and the parish presentation place the dedication of the present temple 5 September 2021during the ministry of the second parish priest, Father Thomas Aquinas Kim Dae-sik.
The work used grey brick and consolidated the enclosure in the current direction of Urae 3-gil. Architecture gives material continuity to a community born six years earlier.
The image of the Patron
The diocesan presentation points out that in the wide access of the compound there is an image of Mary in her Asunción, patron of the parish.
The visible image helps to identify the title, but is not the subject of an apparition or extraordinary statements. It refers to the mystery celebrated by the whole Church.
Ungok, a linked station
The episcopal directory and the newsletter record Ungok as a mission station dependent on Yulgok. The parish responsibility thus surpasses the immediate setting of the temple.
To attend a station means to maintain the sacramental and community closeness with faithful living outside the main urban core.
A parish that builds community
The pastoral guidance published for 2023-2024 promoted participation in meetings of small sectors and neighborhood groups. The community was organized in 13 sectors.
In a new city, these groups can avoid anonymity, identify needs and help the parish not only depend on multitudes.
August 15 in Korea
The Solemnity of the Assumption coincides with GwangbokjeolOn the day of the Korean liberation. During his 2014 visit, Pope Francis explained how the Marian party illuminates the historical experience of the people.
Freedom received should not become self-reliance. It is called to be service, solidarity, justice and a constant search for reconciliation.
Hope for a divided peninsula
The diocesan newsletter invites you to pray every night for peace on the Korean peninsula. Yulgok can join that intention in the fourth glorious mystery of the Rosary.
True peace does not ignore the wounds. It needs truth, dignity, patience and a firm will not to dehumanize those who live across the border.

The point coincides with the current enclosure and episcopal direction. It has not been placed in the generic centre of Gimcheon or elsewhere called Yulgok.
To visit and pray
Yulgok is an active parish. It is appropriate to confirm the hours, respect the celebrations and ask for permission before photographing people.
The fourth glorious mystery can be prayed for the sick, the deceased and the carers, and a ten for the families that start a new life and for the peace of Korea.
