Marian devotion
On the island of Namhaea community of farmers, fishermen and workers Our Lady of Sorrows. The parish chose this advocation by consecrating its 1989 temple, after the shared sacrifice that required it to be built.

Una parroquia insular desde 1961
Namhae began as a mission before being erected as a parish in late 1961. For decades he accompanied a population used to physical effort, intensive agriculture and life conditioned by the sea.
The episcopal directory today records two communities dependent on the parish. His mission therefore extends beyond the temple in Namhae--eup.
The construction of 1989
After years of growth, the community raised a new temple in 1989. The parish history recalls the difficulties, renunciation and work that the faithful took to make it possible.
In the consecration of the church they decided to change the patronage and to entrust themselves to Our Lady of the Dolores. The choice was born from a concrete community experience: seeking comfort in Mary and learning from her to transform pain into fidelity.
Mary under the cross
The advocation especially contemplates Mary at the foot of the cross and receiving the body of Jesus. His pain is not despair: he remains united to love and open to the promise of resurrection.
The image of the Piety sums up that compassion. Mary sustains Christ and, in him, embraces the suffering of those who lose a child, go through a disease, suffer poverty or work until exhaustion.
Pain turned into care
Devotion has inspired a pastoral approach to people who are left outside the ordinary help networks. The community has worked with social services to identify needy neighbours, distribute food, clean houses in extreme conditions and make repairs.
This service well expresses the spirituality of the advocation: who has contemplated Mary by the cross learns not to turn away the look from the suffering of others.
A church on the way to Namhae
The parish area is part of one of the island's hiking routes, the Namhae Barae-gil. The travelers pass through a garden that is cared for by the parish groups and find in it a place of rest.
Thus, the Virgin Dolorosa also accompanies the simple tiredness of the walker. The parish participates in local history not only through celebrations, but also through hospitality and memory.
Sixty years of preserved history
At the age of six decades, the community prepared a parish history that was publicly presented in 2023, after the pandemic prevented a wide celebration of the anniversary in 2021.
The publication recognizes that keeping faith alive in a demanding territory was not easy and attributes a part of that perseverance to the spirit of the patron: suffering without closing the heart and continuing to serve.

To visit and pray
Namhae is an active parish and a local road point. The hours should be confirmed, the celebrations respected and the garden and community spaces taken care of.
You can pray the Crown of the Seven Dolores or meditate John 19, 25-27 for the exhausted workers, the mourning families, those who live in isolation and those who care for hidden needs.

Namhae's painful mother, you remained with Jesus and did not look away from suffering. It comforts those who work without rest, the injured families and those who live alone. Give us eyes to discover the hidden needs and hands willing to care. Lead us from the cross to the hope of resurrection. Amen.
