Before the large modern neighborhoods occupied southern Seoul, a small Catholic community began its life with an institution dedicated to caring for homeless children. That parish, today called Jamwon-dong, officially invokes Our Lady of Fatima and retains a devotion that unites Rosary, conversion, peace and service.

Official address: Our Lady of Fatima.

Temple: The Catholic Church of Jamwon-dong.

Address: 110 Jamwon-ro, Jamwon-dong, Seocho-gu, Seúl 06520, Corea del Sur.

Parish Foundation: July 10, 1947.

Original name: parroquia de Jamsil-ri.

Jurisdiction: Archdiocese of Seoul, West Seoul region, 12th district of Seocchio.

Coordinates checked: 37.5133008, 127.0072445.

The patronage is officially documented

The Episcopal Conference of Korea records MatureOur Lady of Fatima, as patron of Jamwon@-@ dong. The episcopal directory also confirms the date of foundation, the direction and its membership in the Archdiocese of Seoul.

The parish history shows that the dedication continues to live: in 2017 the community entered an image of Our Lady of Fatima and in 2024 its children represented the events of 1917.

Precision: Jamwon-dong is not a place of Marian apparition. The apparition linked to this advocation occurred in Fatima, Portugal. In Seoul there is a parish under that patronage and a community that keeps its message.

Fatima: essential context

The tradition of Fatima dates back to 1917, when three pastoral children - Lucía dos Santos and his cousins Francisco and Jacinta Marto - declared to have received several apparitions from the Virgin in Cova da Iria.

The spiritual core spread by the Church insists on prayer, conversion, penance, the Rosary and peace. It should not be reduced to curiosity about secrets, dates or disasters.

A call to conversion

Christian conversion begins by recognizing one's own sin and returning to God. Fátima's devotion does not allow us to point out with superiority the guilt of others or to interpret each conflict as an identifiable punishment.

To pray for the conversion of the world also requires to review one's own violence, lie, indifference and lack of mercy.

The Rosary for Peace

The Rosary occupies a central place in the message associated with Fatima. His serene repetition allows us to contemplate with Mary the life of Christ and to present before God the wounds of peoples.

Prayer for peace does not replace justice, diplomacy or the protection of victims. It forms the heart to work without hatred and not to turn the adversary into someone deprived of dignity.

Foundation in 1947

La parroquia nació el 10 July 1947shortly after the liberation of Korea from Japanese colonial rule and before the war-consolidated division. His initial name was Jamsil@-@ ri.

The community developed in a very different environment from the current urban landscape. The official history presents it as the oldest Catholic parish in the current sectors of Gangnam and Seocchio.

A community with Seongsimwon

The first parish priest was linked to Seongsimwon, a work of care and education for homeless children. In 1954, a wooden church was erected inside that compound.

This social root is part of the identity of the parish. Marian devotion appeared associated with a place where faith should be translated into protection, home and education.

The destruction during the Korean War

Between 1950 and 1953, the community was displaced and destroyed by the Korean War. The parochial chronology does not allow for the reconstruction of all personal experiences, but it makes a profound break.

For a church dedicated to Our Lady of Fatima, that memory makes prayer for peace especially concrete. Korea knows the human cost of a divided peninsula.

The Jamsil-ri a Jamwon-dong

In 1977 the parish adopted the name Jamwon-dong. Three years later it was administratively separated from Seongsimwon, preserving a shared history but developing its own structures.

The change of name does not mean a new foundation. The episcopal date remains in 1947 and the parish history presents a continuity through war, reconstruction and urban transformation.

The temple raised in the 1980s

The community secured the ground for the new temple in 1983. In 1984 he organized apostolic associations and spirituality groups and celebrated the dedication of the parish building.

The present temple is therefore the fruit of a community that had been living for several decades. The building expresses this continuity, but the story of Jamwon@-@ dong began long before its present walls.

A parish that grew up with the city

South Seoul experienced an extraordinary urbanization. The small post-war community went on to serve thousands of Catholics in a dense and well-connected neighborhood.

Growth is different from 1947: to care for urban solitude, to transmit faith between generations, to open space for people with disabilities and to prevent material abundance from making suffering invisible.

The image of Fatima of 2017

The year of the centenary of the apparitions, the parish enthroned an image of Our Lady of Fatima and also celebrated her seventy years of life. Coincidences linked local memory to the universal history of advocation.

A sacred image is not an amulet and does not contain autonomous power. It helps to direct the look and prayer to God, recalling the Gospel lived by Mary.

Seventy years: memory to serve

The 2017 celebration was not just a tribute to the past. The community expressed the desire to grow in unity, share with others and incarnate the love of Christ.

The Christian memory is fruitful when it recognizes the gifts received and asks what responsibility comes from them.

Children who tell the story of Fatima

In May 2024, the children's group "Queen of the Star of the Morning," belonging to the World Apostolate of Fatima, represented a work on the events of 1917 during the parish Marian celebration.

The initiative had begun the previous year. The children helped the community remember the call to pray the Rosary for the end of the wars and for the peace of the world.

Transmitir la fe sin asustar

In explaining Fatima to children it is appropriate to avoid sensationalist images, threats or political interpretations. Conversion is proposed from the love of God and freedom, not from fear.

The representation of Jamwon@-@ dong allows us to understand that children are not just spectators: they can pray, ask, create and remind adults of the urgency of peace.

An inclusive community

A choir was born in 2011 and later became a Sunday school for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities. This continuity shows a community capable of adapting its structures to offer real participation.

Inclusion is not about doing something "for" others from afar. It requires listening, facilitating communication, valuing gifts and allowing each person to be an active part of the liturgy and common life.

Mary and the dignity of every person

The Magnificat of Mary proclaims a God who looks at the humble and knocks down false grandezas. Honoring Our Lady of Fatima forces us to recognize the dignity of those who a society classifies for their productivity or independence.

The root of Seongsimwon and the inclusive Sunday school unite two moments of the same intuition: a Marian parish must be home to those who need care and belonging.

Prayer for Korea and for all peoples

Fatima's message was born during a world war. Jamwon@-@ dong was destroyed during the Korean War. These stories invite us to pray without trivializing violence or forgetting those who bear its consequences.

Peace on the peninsula requires truth, human rights, prudent dialogue and protection of families. The Rosary can sustain that hope without offering simple political solutions.

verified location for the map

The episcopal direction and the parish web place the temple in 110 Jamwon-ro, Seocho-gu, Seúl. The cartography consulted by the Korean name returns 37.5133008, 127.0072445, a match to the compound.

The marker has not been placed in the generic center of the neighborhood or in Jamsil, which was the ancient name of the parish.

No confundir Jamwon y Jamsil

The parish was born as Jamsil-ri, but since 1977 it has been called Jamwon-dong and is now in the district of Seocchio. Jamsil is currently another large sector of Seoul, across the river and within Songpa.

The official direction, the chronology and the coordinates allow to preserve the historical continuity without mismoving the marker.

To visit and pray

Jamwon-dong is an active parish. The schedules can be changed and must be confirmed before they go. The liturgical silence must be respected and permission requested before photographing people, especially minors.

One ten can be offered for the peace of the world, one for the reconciliation of Korea and another for children and persons with disabilities who enrich the community.

Prayer to Our Lady of Fatima of Jamwon-dong

Our Lady of Fatima, keeps the parish of Jamwon@-@ dong and the city of Seoul. You who call to conversion and prayer, teach us to contemplate Christ in the Rosary and to serve him in every person. It comforts those suffering from war, protects children and accompanies persons with disabilities. It is committed to the reconciliation of Korea and to a peace based on truth and justice. Amen.
