Marian devotion
← Back to South Korea's Marian Advocations
In the west of the city of Jeju, the parish of Oedo bears the pastoral name of Star of the Sea and is officially entrusted to the Blessed Virgin Mary of Fatima. Both expressions are Marian, but they are not interchangeable: one identifies the community and the other is the patronage registered by the diocese.
Patron title: Our Lady of Fatima.
Korean name: Marriage of the Pleasure God
Parish name: "The Star of the Sea"
Place: 66 Ugwang-ro, Jeju city, Jeju island.
Parish Erection: 30 January 2009.
First Mass: 31 January 2009.
Party holder: May 13.
Jurisdiction: Catholic diocese of Jeju.
Coordinates checked: 33.4901875, 126.4281875.
Name of the parish and patron
The diocesan record leads the community as Oedo Estrella del Mar and, in the field of patronage, identifies the Blessed Virgin Mary of Fatima with a feast on May 13. The national episcopal directory confirms the same patronal title.
An international directory retains an earlier title of St Peter the Apostle for the corresponding point. Since the current Korean official sources agree with each other, this page adopts the existing diocesan patronage and records the discrepancy.
A parish created in 2009
Oedo was erected on January 30, 2009. He received territory from Nohyeong and Hagwi, specifically sectors of Oedo and Gwangnyeong that needed closer pastoral care.
The new community held its first Mass the following day, on January 31. The immediate succession between erection and the first Eucharist underlines that a parish is born to gather, celebrate and serve.
Our Lady of Fatima
The advocation refers to the events of 1917 in Cova da Iria, Portugal, and to the call to prayer, conversion and peace. The Church received the message within Christian life, always subordinate to the Gospel.
The prayer of the Rosary occupies a central place in this spirituality. It does not seek to feed curiosity for predictions, but to guide life towards Christ, penance and responsibility for peace.
Feast of May 13
The diocese sets the 13th of May as a patron's feast, a date linked to the first apparition of Fatima. This celebration clearly distinguishes the patronage of the name Star of the Sea.
John Paul II recalled in Fatima that the call to conversion is deeply rooted in the Gospel. To honor Mary demands to hear again the invitation of Christ to change the heart.
Star of the Sea on an island
Although the patronal advocation is Fatima, the name of the parish retains a particularly expressive Marian image in Jeju: Mary as Star of the Sea, orientation for those who pass through uncertain waters.
The name dialogue with the island geography without turning the sea into simple decoration. It invites fishermen, sailors, families and people whose lives depend on the ocean.
Conversion and peace
The peace requested in Fatima is not reduced to the absence of war. It begins with reconciliation, justice and care for close ties. A parish can live that message by listening, forgiveness and attention to those who are left out.
Marian prayer does not exempt you from acting. On the contrary, it forms a consciousness capable of recognizing suffering and responding with concrete works.
Verified location
The diocese and the Episcopal Conference place the parish in 66 Ugwang-ro, Jeju- yes. The internationally registered ecclesial point provides the code 8Q58FCRH+37, although it retains an outdated employer's title.
The centre of the code corresponds to 33.4901875, 126.4281875. The position coincides with the direction and the distances from Hagwi, Nohyeong and Yeondong; it is the one used on this map.
To visit and pray
Oedo is an active parish. The diocesan hours should be consulted and celebrations and activities respected. The patron party is on May 13.
A visit can be accompanied by a mystery of the Rosary and a concrete prayer for peace, followed by a possible commitment to reconciliation or help.
Prayer to Our Lady of Fátima de Oedo
Our Lady of Fatima, a Star that guides Christ, keeps the parish of Oedo. Teach us to pray faithfully, convert the heart and work for peace. It protects those who live from the sea, accompanies families and comforts those who go through uncertainty. May this community be the light of reconciliation and service in Jeju. Amen.
