An expressly documented patronage
The directory of the Episcopal Conference of Korea identifies the Virgin of Guadalupe as the patron of Seonwon-dong. The official website of the archdiocese of Gwangju confirms the same title, direction and belonging to the district of Yeosu.
It is therefore not an identification derived from a decorative image or an informal name, but a parochial dedication collected by two Korean ecclesial sources.
A community in Yeosu
Seonwon-dong belongs to Yeosu, a coastal city in the south of the Korean peninsula. His parish is part of the archdiocese of Gwangju and serves the ordinary sacramental life of a local community.
The two official sources differ in one year from the date of erection: the episcopal directory indicates 1 February 1981 and the archdiocesan record, 1 February 1982. The discrepancy should not be hidden or resolved by conjecture; confirmation should be requested from the diocesan file.
The meeting of Tepeyac
According to the Catholic tradition presented by Vatican News, in December 1531, the Virgin appeared in Tepeyac to St. John Diego, an indigenous converted to Christianity, and asked him to convey to the bishop the desire for a sanctuary to be raised there.
As a sign, Juan Diego collected roses in winter and carried them in his tylma. The venerated Marian image appeared in the present Basilica of Guadalupe when it was deployed to the bishop.
Mary speaks the language of a people
Pope Francis has highlighted that Guadalupe presented himself with indigenous features and dress and spoke the language of Juan Diego. He did not nullify his culture: he showed that the Gospel can be welcomed without despising the identity of a people.
This aspect has a special resonance in Korea. The devotion received from Mexico does not require copying a foreign culture, but finding a faithful, understandable and truly Korean expression of faith.
Mother of the little ones
Juan Diego did not belong to the powerful. The choice of a simple messenger reveals the Christian predilection for those who are often left out and recalls that everyone has a dignity that does not depend on their rank.
The community of Seonwon-dong can recognize under Mary's mantle migrants, workers, the elderly, the sick, families with difficulties and those who need to be heard without prejudice.
Perseverar sin imponerse
Juan Diego had to return to the bishop several times. His perseverance was neither violence nor a desire for protagonism: he heard, waited and continued his mission with humility.
This teaching helps to live a patient evangelization. Faith is proposed by consistency, service and respect for freedom, never by pressure or contempt.
The tylma and its spiritual sense
The image preserved in Mexico shows Mary surrounded by light, with the moon under her feet and held by an angel. For believers, these signs refer to Scripture and point out that Mary is a creature of God and a servant of his work.
Authentic devotion does not stop in curiosity about the image. It leads to listening to the Gospel, approaching the sacraments, caring for the vulnerable and following Jesus Christ.
Consuelo in the midst of suffering
Francis recalls the maternal question attributed to the Virgin: if she, who is a mother, is not there with her son. Guadalupe thus becomes a spiritual place of comfort and mercy.
Christian comfort does not deny pain or replace medical, social or psychological care. It accompanies the person, mobilizes concrete help and sustains hope.
An advocation that unites continents
The presence of Guadalupe in Yeosu creates a devotional link between Asia and America. It expresses the Catholicity of a Church made up of different peoples who do not lose their identity by sharing one faith.
It also invites people to pray for those who cross seas for work, study or need, and for families separated by borders, migration or the division of the Korean peninsula.
Liturgical date
The memory of Our Lady of Guadalupe is celebrated the 12 December. It is an appropriate occasion to meditate on the encounter of cultures, the dignity of indigenous peoples and the spiritual motherhood of Mary.
Local times can change. In order to participate in a celebration, the parish or the current information of the archdiocese should be consulted directly.

To visit and pray
Seonwon-dong is an active parish. The visitor must respect the offices, the prayer of the community and the indications of the place; he must not expect to find there the original of the tylma, preserved in Mexico.
A visit can be accompanied by the Rosary, a prayer for peace among peoples and a concrete commitment to welcome someone who feels foreign or excluded.
Prayer to Our Lady of Guadalupe of Seonwon-dong
Our Lady of Guadalupe, Mother of the true God and close mother of your children, keeps the parish of Seonwon-dong and the city of Yeosu. Teach us to welcome the Gospel in our own language, to respect the dignity of each people and to persevere with humility. It comforts those who suffer, protects those who cross the seas and leads Korea and the world to Jesus Christ, a source of reconciliation and peace. Amen.
