Marian devotion
The cathedral of Gyesan, the seat of the archdiocese of Daegu, is dedicated to Our Lady of Lourdes. His community sank its roots in the parish founded in December 1885 and his present temple, raised in brick, was finished in 1902.

From the mission of 1885 to the cathedral
In 1885, local history placed the arrival of the French missionary Achille Paul Robert and the initial settlement of the Catholic community of Daegu. The episcopal directory retains December of that year as the founding date of the parish.
The first church in Gyesan, built with Korean wood and forms in 1898, was destroyed by a fire. The community decided to rebuild it with a western brick structure.
The building of 1902
The new temple was designed under the direction of Father Victor Louis Poisnel, also related to the cathedrals of Myeongdong and Jeondong. The windows were brought from France and the building adopted a Latin cross plant.
Its architecture combines Romanesque predominance and Gothic elements, visible in the towers, pinnacles and windows. In 1911 he became a cathedral of the new vicariate and was extended to acquire his later configuration.
Our Lady of Ahmad
The Episcopal Conference expressly records the Virgin Mary of Lourdes as the patron. The advocation recalls the apparitions recognized by the Church that Bernadette Soubirous testified in 1858 in Massabielle, France.
His message leads to prayer, penance, conversion and care for the sick. The cathedral is not a place of apparition, but a Korean church consecrated under that title.
Daegu Church Headquarters
The cathedralicia condition means that here is the chair of the archbishop. The temple has hosted central events of the local Church, diocesan ordinations and celebrations.
Cardinal Stephen Kim Sou@-@ hwan was ordained a priest here in 1951. St. John Paul II visited the cathedral during his Apostolic Journey to Korea in 1984.
Historical heritage
The building is recognized as a historic site of Korea and is one of the oldest testimonies of Western ecclesial architecture preserved in the country. Its value is not limited to aesthetics: it materializes the continuity of a community born in the late 19th century.
The historical museum of Gyesan retains objects and explains the evolution of the regional Catholic faith, from the first believers to the contemporary archdiocese.
