A parish of Lourdes in Daegu
La Conferencia Episcopal de Corea registers como patronazgo Sir Simon RattleOur Lady of Lourdes. The title officially identifies the parish and not just a devotional image present in it.
This dedication has a particular echo in Daegu. The archdiocese itself recognizes Our Lady of Lourdes as a patron and retains a long tradition linked to the Marian Grotto of Seongmodang.
Gugwu and his local identity
The parish was founded on 30 January 2002 to serve the Catholic growth of the northern sector of Daegu. It is found in Guam-dong, within Buk-gu, although it is named parochial in the city.
The message from Lourdes
The advocation recalls the apparitions received by Saint Bernardite Soubirous in Massabielle in 1858. His spiritual center is in prayer, penance, conversion and humble trust in God.
The Church does not understand Lourdes as an automatic promise of healing. His devotion leads to accompanying the sick, defending his dignity, supporting those who care and recognizing that suffering never makes a person less valuable.
The Marian tradition of the Archdiocese
In an official reflection, the Archdiocese recalls that her first church in Gyesan was dedicated to Our Lady of Lourdes and that the first apostolic vicar of Daegu proclaimed the Virgin of Lourdes as patron of the local Church.
Gugwu is part of this continuity, but should not be confused with the Cathedral of Gyesan, the Cathedral of Beomeo or Seongmodang. It is a concrete parish, founded in the 21st century.
Attention to the new generations
The parish has participated in youth initiatives of the Archdiocese aimed at strengthening youth communities. This data shows that Marian identity also results in listening, training and responsibility for new generations.
