Marian devotion
In Jumunjin, a coastal town of Gangneung open to the East Sea, a centenary parish has as its patron Our Lady of Lourdes. His history has known the transfer, fire, war, reconstruction, Franciscan mission and damage caused by a typhoon. The permanence of the community turns this advocation into a memory of comfort and perseverance.

A patron confirmed by the diocese
The diocese of Chuncheon officially calls the community "parish of Our Lady of Lourdes of Jumunjin" and establishes its establishment on 23 November 1923. The directory of the Korean Episcopal Conference confirms the same patronage and leadership.
There is no local Marian apparition in Jumunjin. The parish receives the title of the apparitions of Lourdes, which occurred in France in 1858, and embodies it in its own Korean history.
De Geumgwanga
The immediate origin is found in the community of Geumgwang-ri. The priest Yi Cheol- yeon began his pastoral work there and decided to move to Jumunjin to expand the evangelization around the new port.
November 23, 1923 marks the formal beginning of the parish in Jumunjin. The community was thus linked to fishermen, coastal families and workers from a changing population.
The 1929 Fire
In January 1929 a fire completely destroyed the church. After the loss, priest Kim In@-@ sang moved to Gangneung and Jumunjin was reduced to secondary station.
The material destruction did not erase the community. This stage recalls that a parish does not identify itself with its walls alone: it lives in the transmitted faith, domestic prayer and solidarity of its members.
Restoration and new church
In November 1951, during the difficult context after the beginning of the Korean war, a priest again resided and Jumunjin regained his parish status. The reconstruction culminated in the celebration of the first Mass in the new temple in January 1955.
The building, with a basic floor on a Latin cross and tower on access, testifies to the constructive religious technique of the 1950s. Its historical and architectural value has motivated its recognition as the registered heritage of Gangwon.
Thirty years of Franciscan presence
On September 3, 1967, pastoral care was entrusted to the Minor Friars. For thirty years the Franciscans accompanied the community, until returning responsibility to the diocese of Chuncheon on 3 September 1997.
Franciscan spirituality, focused on fraternity, simplicity and the care of creation, finds a natural resonance in a parish by the sea and dependent on the rhythms of nature.
Russian typhoon and restoration
In August 2002, the Russian typhoon caused damage in different parts of the church. Priests, consecrated and lay people collaborated in a wide restoration that made it possible to recover and embellish the whole.
This episode offers a concrete image of Church: reparation came not by an isolated gesture, but by shared work. Under the name of Lourdes, comfort became cooperation.
The apparitions of Lourdes
Between February and July 1858, Bernadette Soubirous claimed to have found a Lady who called her to prayer, penance and conversion in the Grotto of Massabielle. On March 25, he heard the name "I am the Immaculate Conception."
The Church recognized the apparitions after an investigation. Devotion is not focused on pursuing the extraordinary, but on returning to Christ, reconciliation, serving the sick and trusting in God's mercy.
Lourdes and the sick
February 11 is also the World Sick Day. The link does not authorize promises of healing or contempt of medicine. He invites to accompany the sick with competence, tenderness and respect.
In Jumunjin this dimension can embrace the elderly, isolated people, injured workers, exhausted families and those who face physical or psychological diseases. Prayer accompanies health treatment; it never replaces it.
Mary with those who live from the sea
Coastal life knows beauty and risk. Fishermen, crews and families depend on the climate and load with absences, uncertainty and accidents. Mary can be invoked as a close mother, without turning faith into superstition or guarantee of immunity.
Devotion leads to improving security, caring for affected families and protecting the sea on which the community depends. Prayer and responsibility must remain united.
Water as a sign
The water of Lourdes recalls Baptism and the life received from God. It's not a magic object. In Christian tradition, the sign leads to conversion, gratitude and solidarity.
By the sea of Gangwon, water acquires a particular resonance: a source of sustenance and also a force that demands respect. Taking care of coasts, rivers and oceans is a concrete way to guard creation.
The Rosary in Jumunjin
Bernadette prayed the Rosary during the apparitions. The parish can live this prayer by contemplating Christ with Mary and by trusting the needs of the coastal population.
Peace on the Korean peninsula, those working at sea, the sick, disaster victims and families who rebuild their lives after a loss, are appropriate intentions.

Jumunjin is an active parish and a heritage good. The visitor must respect the liturgy, the silence, the restricted areas and the information on photographs. The hours can be changed and must be confirmed with the parish.
Children and vulnerable persons should not be photographed or identified without authorization. No devotional practice justifies invasive contact, pressure, informal data collection or unsubstantiated medical statements.

Our Lady of Lourdes, Mother who leads to Christ, keeps the parish of Jumunjin and those who live from the sea. Hold the sick, comfort families who have suffered losses and protect those who work among the waves. Teach us to rebuild together, to care for creation and to serve without promising what we cannot give. It reaches reconciliation and peace for Korea. Amen.
