Our Lady of Lourdes de Udo - A community that was reborn on the island

On the small island of Udo, east of Jeju, a community that knew the dissolution and the rebirth is entrusted to Our Lady of Lourdes. His history extends from a first missionary station in 1904 to the current quasi-parish, with a priest resident since 2021.

The first community of 1904

The diocese documents that Udo was founded in 1904 as a missionary station dependent on the parish of Jeju, now the cathedral of Jungang. The organized presence was early, but did not manage to maintain it on a continuous basis.

In 1911 the community was dissolved. Keeping this data avoids narrating an artificially linear history and allows us to recognize the real difficulties of a mission on a separate island.

Restoration in 1947

The missionary station was reestablished on 26 October 1947. The resumption, more than three decades later, manifests the perseverance of local Catholics and those who resumed their pastoral accompaniment.

When Seongsanpo was raised to parish on August 23, 1973, Udo was placed under his attention. The strait that separated both islands made the journey a concrete part of pastoral life.

From chapel to present temple

The community erected a new chapel on 25 November 1993. Years later he built the present temple, dedicated on November 9, 2019.

The two dates should not be confused: 1993 corresponds to the previous chapel and 2019 to the building that serves the community today.

Cuasiparrochia since 2021

On 28 January 2021 he was assigned to Udo a resident priest. On April 20, the community was elevated to the quasi-parish, a canonical figure that gives similar attention to the parish even if it retains a particular pastoral situation.

On an island, the priest's residence reduces the dependence on maritime displacement and facilitates regular celebration, catechesis and the accompaniment of the sick and families.

Our Lady of Ahmad

The advocation comes from the apparitions that Bernadette Soubirous claimed to live in Massabielle in 1858 and which were recognized by the ecclesiastical authority. The message calls for prayer, conversion and penance.

Lourdes is especially linked to the sick, not because every disease disappears, but because the Christian community is called to accompany, care and sustain hope.

A hope that goes through interruptions

The history of Udo offers a particular reading of the spirituality of Lourdes. A community disappeared as an organized structure and, however, could be reborn decades later.

Christian hope does not deny breakdowns or losses. He trusts that God can open a way again through the humble fidelity of concrete people.

Care in an island community

The distance conditions access to services, the mobility of older people and the lives of families. Pope Francis has remembered that loneliness and isolation aggravate suffering and that caring for the sick requires caring for their relationships.

The patronage of Lourdes invites the community to be close to those who cannot travel, to those who wait for a consultation outside the island and to families that accompany long processes.

Verified location

The diocese and the Episcopal Conference agree in direction 8 Yeongiljinsa-gil, Udo-myeon. Open mapping identifies within this sector the place of Christian veneration in 33.5098259, 126.9526671.

The point is inside the corridor of the official address and is used on the map. Udo does not yet appear as an individual church in the international inventory consulted, so verification is based on Korean sources and local mapping.

To visit and pray

Udo is a living quasi-parish and access depends on shipping and time. It is appropriate to confirm ferry, liturgical times and possible seasonal changes before going.

The visit must respect the island life, celebrations and community rest. A prayer for the sick, carers and isolated people can be offered.
