It is not claimed that Mary appeared in Bucheon. This page documents a Korean parish dedicated to the apvocation born of the apparitions recognized by the Church in Lourdes, France, in 1858.
Heavy in 1858
Between February and July 1858, the young Bernadette Soubirous reported meetings with a lady in the Grotto of Massabielle. On March 25, he heard the words "I am the Immaculate Conception."
The Church examined the facts before recognizing the apparitions. His central message calls for prayer, penance, conversion and trust in God's mercy.
Mary leads to Christ
Lourdes' devotion does not present Mary as an autonomous source of salvation. She leads to Jesus Christ and accompanies the people in listening to the Gospel, the celebration of the sacraments and charity.
The water of the grotto is a sign that recalls Baptism. It is not a magic substance, nor does it replace diagnosis, medical treatment or professional care.
A parish born at Christmas
Wonmi-dong was erected on 25 December 1977. The coincidence with Christmas links its institutional origin to the mystery of Christ that enters into history and shares human fragility.
The official history of Bucheon identifies it as the third separate parish of Sosa, after Samjeong-dong and Simgok-dong. Its creation accompanied the city's urban and pastoral growth.
Daughter of Sosa
Sosa, founded in 1946, was a parent community for many parishes of Bucheon. Under his eighth parish priest Simgok was separated in 1976 and Wonmi-dong the following year.
The filiation retains memory and communion, but each parish has its own patronage. The title of Lourdes de Wonmi-dong is verified by its specific record, not by automatic inheritance of Sosa.
A neighborhood in transformation
Wonmi-dong is located west of Wonmisan, one of Bucheon's main elevations. The current name of the neighborhood replaced the old name Jojong-ri when Bucheon became a city in 1973.
The parish was born a few years later, in a period of reorganization and urbanization. The Christian community offered a stable place for the prayer and accompaniment of the families around it.
Lourdes and the sick
The liturgical memory of Our Lady of Lourdes is celebrated 11 February. St. John Paul II chose that date for the World Day of the Sick, established in 1992.
The day calls for those who suffer not to be forgotten or marginalized. A parish dedicated to Lourdes is called to listen to the sick, support his family and value health professionals and caregivers.
Pray and care responsibly
Prayer can ask for healing, strength and peace, but it must never be used to blame those who do not improve. The disease shows no lack of faith.
Seeking medical care, following contrasting treatments and protecting the vulnerable are acts compatible with faith. No promise of healing justifies giving up care or exploiting the pain economically.
