Our Lady of Lourdes of Yongsomak - Refugee faith and living heritage in Wonju

Between mountains and Sillim fields, the Yongsomak brick church retains the memory of Catholic families who sought refuge after the persecution of 1866. The parish, built in 1904, is dedicated to Our Lady of Lourdes.

A confirmed advocation

The Episcopal Conference of Korea records The Castle of LourdesOur Lady of Lourdes, as patron of Yongsomak. Good News Catholic confirms the same dedication, the founding date and the home.

The title refers to the apparitions of Lourdes, France, not to an apparition in Yongsomak. No ecclesial declaration of a local supernatural phenomenon has been found.

Lourdes and Bernardita

On February 11, 1858, Bernadette Soubirous, a young woman with a poor family, reported seeing a young woman in white in the Grotto of Massabielle. The meetings continued during that year.

Benedict XVI recalled that the message transmitted was simple: prayer, penance and conversion. Its tone does not authorize sensationalist predictions or commercial promises of healing.

"I am the Immaculate Conception"

On March 25, 1858, the Lady presented herself to Bernardite as the Immaculate Conception. The expression links Lourdes with the dogma proclaimed by Pius IX four years earlier.

The Immaculate Conception refers to Mary preserved from original sin from the first moment of her conception by God's grace and in attention to the merits of Christ; it is not the virginal conception of Jesus.

Prayer, conversion and service

Lourdes' devotion is not reduced to water or to the search for wonders. He invites us to turn to Christ, celebrate the sacraments, pray and care for those who suffer.

The Church celebrates the World Day of the Sick on February 11. Its sense requires that communities place sick, weak and caring people at the centre of their attention.

The healing cannot be promised

Prayer can sustain, reconcile and give hope, but it does not replace diagnosis, treatment, rehabilitation or psychological accompaniment. No one must charge for guaranteeing miracles.

The dignity of a sick person does not depend on healing. Accompanying her includes listening to her decisions, alleviating the pain and avoiding blaming her for an alleged lack of faith.

Refuge after the persecution of 1866

The story spread by the city of Wonju places the local Catholic origin in believers who fled the great persecution of 1866 and settled in the Yongsomak area.

At first they celebrated in straw-covered houses. The community was born this way before its building and was supported by families seeking security to live their faith.

Yongsomak fue erigida el 4 May 1904. Public sources describe it as the third parish established in the province of Gangwon, after Pungsuwon and Wonju.

His first parish priest, Father Poyaud, bought and adapted a straw house to use as a church while the community was consolidating.

The Chizallet Project

In 1914 he arrived as the third parish priest Pierre Chizallet. The Encyclopedia of Korean Culture states that it personally designed the new temple and brought Chinese technicians to carry out the work.

This data recalls that the heritage was born of international collaboration and specialized work, not of an isolated construction of its human context.

The brick temple of 1915

After just over a year of work, the church was finished in the fall of 1915 and was dedicated under the patronage of Our Lady of Lourdes.

The building, about a hundred. pyeng, uses brick and a Western composition adapted to the scale of a rural community.

The façade has an elevated central tower and neo-Gothic language. The interior is organized into three ships, separated by wooden columns, with the presbytery at the front.

The constructive simplicity and continuity of its use allow us to understand the architecture of small Korean Catholic churches from the early 20th century.

A protected heritage

The temple was declared in 1986 well-cultural material of Gangwon, today called tangible cultural heritage, with the number 106.

Protection recognizes its historical and architectural value. It does not amount to a judgment of miracles and requires the preservation of materials, proportions and environment with technical rigour.

Zelkov

The municipal descriptions highlight the large zelkovas surrounding the church and the pine forest located behind the image of Mary. The set forms a recognizable religious and rural landscape.

Taking care of the heritage includes respecting trees, soil, water and biodiversity, in addition to the building.

To the left of the temple is a Marian image at the foot of the hill. His presence makes the patronage of Lourdes visible and offers an outer place of prayer.

The statue should not be described as an apparent, miraculous or exact replica without a source to prove it. It is recorded only as a devotional element of the enclosure.

The Museum of San Lorenzo

The official tourist sources mention next to the forest the Museum of Reliquias of San Lorenzo, an auxiliary building of the complex.

The relics require sober veneration and documentation of origin. They are not amulets or items for sale.

The Korean War

In 1950, during the war, North Korean troops used the church as a warehouse. Forced change of use is part of the material memory of the conflict.

The file does not attribute individual responsibilities without additional documentation. The fact calls for prayer for civilians, combatants, separate families and a just peace on the peninsula.

A living rural community

The consulted episcopal directory records 710 faithful, a dependent station and presence of the Sisters of the Annunciation. Its territory reaches Sillim-myeon, with some exceptions, and Haksan-ri in Jecheon.

The record indicates a missionary community, but does not offer in the summary its name, direction or possible advocation.

The marker corresponds to the historical complex of Yongsomak. The centre of Sillim-myeon is not used or a generic position of the road.

To visit and pray

The church is active parish and protected heritage. It is necessary to call before, respect the celebrations, not touch historical goods and avoid photographs of people without consent.

It can be prayed for the sick and those who care for them, for the refugee families who passed on the faith and for the responsible preservation of the temple and its landscape.
