A confirmed patronage

The Bishops' Conference of Korea The Congregation of Galmel Mountain, Virgin Mary of Mount Carmel, as patronage of Oryu@-@ dong. Good News Catholic confirms the parish, its direction and date of foundation.

A Marian apparition in Oryu-dong is not documented. It is a parochial dedication to an advocation born of Carmelite spirituality.

Precision: "Monte Carmelo" and "Virgen del Carmen" designate the same vocation. The scapular is not an amulet and does not automatically guarantee salvation: it expresses belonging, prayer and desire to live the Gospel following the example of Mary.

El monte bíblico

Carmel, in the Holy Land, appears in Scripture as a place of beauty and encounter with God. The Carmelite tradition was born there and put its first church under the protection of Mary.

John Paul II explained that the mountain symbolizes the way to Christ. Marian devotion does not have Mary as a separate goal, but as a Mother who leads her Son.

Mary, Mother, Patron and Sister

The Carmel family sees Mary as a woman of listening, silence, prayer and service. She retains the Word and remains faithful by the cross.

These attitudes offer an urban parish a simple program: to listen before judging, to pray before acting and to serve without looking for a role.

The sense of the scapular

The pontifical message to the Order of Carmen teaches that the scapular is essentially a habit, a sign of spiritual association and commitment to a Marian life form.

To carry it requires to seek an existence configured with Christ. It does not replace sacraments, conversion, justice or charity.

A station born in 1957

The Guro Digital Encyclopedia documents that the community began in 1957 as an Oryu-dong station. Some ten Catholics then went to the parish of Sosa to participate in the Mass.

The growth of the number of faithful led to the creation of a parish of its own. History thus preserves the memory of those who traveled distances and maintained a community still without stable structure.

Parish Foundation in 1968

Oryu-dong was separated from Dangsana-dong and erected as parish 23 September 1968. His first parish priest was Father John Duregeon.

The community acquired a land of 1,488 square meters and finished a first church of 162 square meters.

A temple concluded with help

The project of a new temple was interrupted by economic difficulties. The work was completed with the help of the Holy See.

The dedication was held 19 September 1978. History teaches that receiving help can be part of ecclesial communion and not a cause of shame.

A community between workers and families

Guro was marked by industrialization, internal migration and urban transformation. Many families built their lives in the midst of demanding days and changing housing.

The spirituality of Carmel offers interiority without escape: silence to listen to God and strength to live with dignity the daily work.

Food aid and solidarity

The local cultural source documents bazares for poor people and collaboration in the free dining room Thomas House in Yeongdeungpo.

These activities make visible that Mary's mantle is not a sentimental image: protection becomes food, company and defense of those who are exposed.

A hundred won a day

Community patterns included saving a hundred won a day and creating concrete links between parish groups and difficult neighbours.

A small amount, sustained with fidelity, recalls the logic of the Gospel: modest gestures can form a stable network of mercy.

Donation and care of life

The parish promoted blood donation, organs and umbilical cord blood. They are actions that require medical information, free consent and ethical guarantees.

The devotion to Mary thus joins the respect of the body and the desire that other people may live, always within the law and professional accompaniment.

The current community

The consulted episcopal directory records 5,642 faithful, two priests, presence of the Congregation of Jesus and no dependent station.

These are administrative figures subject to update. The published parish phone is 02-2618-9051; it is appropriate to confirm the hours before going.

Silence that allows to hear

In a noisy city, Carmel invites you to reserve times of silence. It is not isolation: it helps to recognize the truth itself and the needs of others.

The contemplative prayer matures when it produces patience, reconciliation, responsible decisions and attention to those who cannot make themselves heard.

Protection without superstition

Invoking Mary's mantle expresses confidence in her intercession. It should never be used to promise immunity from disease, accident or consequences of reckless decisions.

The faith also calls for prevention, health care, reporting of abuse and responsible use of available human resources.

For those who go through mistakes and new beginnings

The name Oryu can be transliterated in a way similar to the Korean word for "error," although its name has different origin. Without forcing this linguistic coincidence, every Christian community knows the need for forgiveness and the new beginning.

Maria del Carmen accompanies those who recognize a mistake, repair the damage and walk again with humility.

For the peace of Korea

From the west of Seoul you can pray for those who live separated from their families and for Christian communities who cannot express themselves freely.

Carmelite contemplation holds an active peace: it does not feed hatred, seek truth and protect the dignity of all people.

verified location for the map

The official address is 86-9 Gocheok-ro 18-gil. The cartography contrasted by Korean name and home places the church in 37.4980246, 126.8456484.

The marker corresponds to the parish building, not the administrative centre of Oryu@-@ dong, the former parish of Sosa or another Christian community.

To visit and pray

One can pray for workers and families, one for donors and the sick, and another for those who serve in canteens and social projects.

On July 16, the memory of the Virgin of Carmen, is an occasion to renew prayer, to understand the scapular correctly and to practice a concrete work of mercy.

Prayer to Our Lady of Mount Carmel of Oryu@-@ dong

Mary, Mother and Flower of Carmel, accompanies the parish of Oryu-dong. Teach us to listen to the Word in silence, to follow Christ faithfully and to turn devotion into service. It protects workers and families, comforts the sick and the alone, and blesses those who share food, blood, time and hope. It guides all Korea on the path of truth, reconciliation and peace. Amen.
