Our Lady of the Poor of Danggam - Bannux in the urban heart of Busan

La parroquia de Danggamin Busan, is officially dedicated to Our Lady of Bannux, the Virgin of the Poor. Since 1978, this title, born in a small Belgian village, has accompanied a community raised in an urban and working neighborhood of Korea.

The Virgin of the Poor

Between 15 January and 2 March 1933, Mariette Beco claimed to have seen the Virgin eight times in Bannux, Belgium. Mary presented herself as "the Virgin of the Poor" and led the girl to a source destined, according to the message, to all nations and especially to the sick.

The Bishop of Liège finally recognized the apparitions in 1949. St. John Paul II recalled this recognition and described Bannux as a place where pilgrims seek comfort and strength with the Mother of the Saviour.

De Banneux a Busan

The directory of the Catholic Church in Korea confirms that Danggam has as its patron The Holy Spirit, literally "Our Lady of Bannux." The parish was founded on 19 January 1978, very close to the annual dates when the cycle of apparitions is remembered.

In the 1970s, Danggam and the nearby neighborhoods received many families linked to the Busan factories. The choice of the Virgin of the Poor is particularly significant in an environment of workers and households facing accelerated urban transformation.

Poor in many ways

Poverty is not limited to lack of property. There is also loneliness, disease, migration, lack of peace and loss of hope. In Bannux, Mary does not glorify misery: she approaches those who suffer it and leads them to Christ.

Pope Francis recalled in 2024 that the phrase "I am the Virgin of the poor" should not be forgotten and called on Christians to be friends of the poor through daily and concrete gestures of closeness.

The Source and Baptism

The water of Bannux refers to Baptism, conversion and new life received from Christ. It is not a magical object: Catholic devotion understands it within prayer, sacraments and trust in God's will.

In Danggam, this spirituality invites the parish to be also a source of reception: a place where the sick find company, poor respect and each person an open door to the Christian community.

Mary and the sick

Our Lady of Bannux is invoked as the health of the sick. The expression does not replace medical care, but calls for strength, care and hope, and commits the faithful to accompany the suffering of others.

St. John Paul II held a Eucharist for the sick in Bannux and stressed that people with many forms of poverty sit there at home. This vocation of home can also be lived in the Korean community.

The Rosary can be prayed for those who lack home, work, health, company or peace. Mary's contemplation must lead to a concrete work of mercy towards a close person.

The spiritual source of Bannux recalls that the consolation received becomes service. Who knows how to look at God also learns to look at the poor without indifference.
